In an ideal world, companies strive for growth, and the entire company works towards this goal. The specific goal is defined by the company's strategy, which is decomposed into product and unit strategies. But what if there is no company strategy and you are in charge of a unit? You need some goals and plans in any case. Yesterday, I was talking to a colleague about this topic, and he voiced an idea that made me wonder if my approach to strategy gathering is right. The thought is surprisingly simple: people aren't stupid. When they don't have an external goal, they optimize for their own interests. I'm the one who wants growth, so I'm active. The other unit lead wants to live life, so they align work to do the bare minimum. That's normal. And before bringing everyone together to form the strategy, it's good to know what other people want.
