At AIS, we believe in the power of collaboration and evidence-based practices to drive school improvement initiatives. Our collaborative professional development programs create a culture of continuous learning and growth among educators, fostering a collective effort towards enhancing teaching and learning experiences. Through engaging discussions and the sharing of best practices, our teachers at AIS work together to identify areas for improvement and collectively address them effectively. The integration of the exact path diagnostic analysis tool further enhances our school improvement strategies by providing valuable insights into specific needs and challenges within our school community. By combining the collaborative approach with data-driven analysis from the diagnostic tool, we can precisely tailor our professional development activities to target areas for improvement. This systematic approach ensures that resources and efforts are strategically focused on areas that will have the greatest impact on our school improvement outcomes. Ultimately, the synergistic blend of collaborative professional development and exact path diagnostic analysis at AIS creates a supportive environment for continuous growth and enhancement. I am so pleased to be presenting again with my wonderful death education colleagues: Illene Cupit, Carla Sofka, and Rebecca Morse! We are presenting on teaching death education online in a post-pandemic world. Here is the description in the conference schedule: "Online education, and death education in particular, expanded significantly during the pandemic. One of the major lessons learned was that online teaching does not involve just mapping what is done in the classroom to an online environment; rather it involves creating course content, student interactions and actions in a unique environment with different rules regarding space, time, and how learning takes place. This symposium will re-examine the lessons we have learned from our experiences as online death educators, with an eye towards providing best teaching practices that are tailored to an online context of teaching dying, death, and loss."

📊 A recent study from the Canopy Project, run by Transcend and the Center on Reinventing Public Education, showed that teacher workforce issues are the top concern for educators right now. This has long been a challenge in 📖 education and its persistence points to how deeply rooted this challenge is in how we’ve designed the 👨🏫 teaching profession. 💭 Here are some of my thoughts on how we can redesign teaching to improve outcomes for schools and students 🏫 👩🎓 💡 What would you add? Embracing Educational Equity: THE Pathway to Greater Access & Opportunity (#3) Today, I am in northern Michigan, at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City, for the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) EdCon 2024. I will open this afternoon’s breakout session with the following: ‘Relying on past practices and outdated models only serves to perpetuate existing inequities and limits the potential of students. To impact educational equity, we must embrace a new approach that breaks away from traditional and outdated teacher practices and assumptions about students’ academic potential. By looking forward, we can envision a more inclusive and equitable educational system that meets the needs of all learners, regardless of their background or circumstances.’ Educators, consider these four prompts that today's session participants will explore: 1. What would it mean for your school culture if you increased access to advanced courses for underserved and underrepresented students? 2. How would increasing access at the highest academic levels change mindsets and expectations more broadly within your school? 3. What policies and practices could you implement at the district and school levels to codify a system of high expectations that results in equitable access to and success in advanced courses? 4. What resources/support do you need in order to advance this work in the 2024-25 school year?

There is content mastery but also the need of knowing pedagogy. Pedagogy is the method of how teachers teach, in theory and in practice. Effective teachers possess a unique kind of knowledge known as pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). PCK blends an understanding of content and pedagogy specifically for instruction. Pedagogy is the teaching of children, or dependent personalities. Andragogy is the facilitation learning for adults, who are self-directed learners. Heutagogy is the management of learning for self-managed learners. Those educational institutions, deans and directors of educational organizations and bodies who understand this are able to make the difference in how they impact their students. You have Educator and then you have teachers. Ask for their teaching philosophy and you will have a window into the impact they can have on your students. This is where instructional designers can make a difference for those who are not the best in pedagogy no matter the sector ….from education or business world.
If every teacher knew their content like this, we probably wouldn’t be up the creek regarding quality education in the United States. Here’s to learning and mastering your craft!
