How a top climate tech venture capital investor does their impact due diligence process ✍🏽 Investing in climate tech is a tough challenge - investors are trying to balance returns and impact with their investments. Measuring returns is (somewhat) straightforward; measuring impact is notoriously less so. 🫤 So, how does Blackhorn Ventures, a top climate tech investor, do it? 🤔 In October 2022, Blackhorn Ventures published their Thematic Impact Approach. In this, they broke down their approach to impact investing. As for impact due diligence, break it down into 5 parts 👇🏽: 1️⃣ Who - who experiences the effect? 2️⃣ What - what outcomes will the effect have? 3️⃣ How much - how much of the effect occurs? 4️⃣ Market gap / "If not but for" - what this effect happen anyway? 5️⃣ Risk - how much risk is there that the outcome will be different from the expectation? Starting the week with sharing a personal accomplishment - something I'm not typically comfortable doing. Honoured to share my first Forbes Forbes Technology Council article on how to get started in early stage investing. Why did I write this piece? I co-founded Spring 10 years ago, Spring Collective in 2022, and Spring Impact Capital in 2023 because I'm passionate in my belief that we need to fund and fuel innovation to create a better future for both people and planet. Early stage ventures have the greatest opportunity to solve some of the world's greatest challenges. Having the right capital at the right place and the right time is critical to help these ventures scale, succeed, and realize the impact they envision. This stage of investing as an asset class can support our own purpose as investors. Early stage investing is right for many people, but definitely not all.
