People Costs: Emotional Strain: Startups Always seriously strain relationships and emotions. Expect to lose friends, workers, and even co-founders along the way. How I handle this - Always Maintain open communication (know the laws) and manage expectations to minimize conflicts or say goodbye Culture fit or what I like better is find "like minded people" do you agree with 20/40/80/100 things. (if not, move on) 2. Finding Product-Market Fit: Constant Pressure: Time is limited (i.e., runway), and every moment has to be spent on product building, customer work, and sales. It’s incredibly frustrating when progress is slow or the dinosaurs are breaking through the gates, and you're the only one trying to "save the day," "be the hero," or "find a way." How I handle this - I'm the Founder and CEO and I'm here to meet the needs of the business for today! We live in today and tomorrow, not next week or what happened in the past. Own every failure point, learn and fix. Blame requires zero ownership. 3. Reputation Costs Failure: With a 90% failure rate, startup founders risk damaging their reputations. People talk regardless of success or failure, and emotionally charged reactions are inevitable. How I handle this - I always maintain transparency, document everything, and treat every failure as an opportunity to immediately fix it or find a possible A, B, C solution(s). In 2024, Be proactive in managing your reputation by controlling the narrative and communicating your efforts and progress E V E R Y W H E R E including S O C I A L M E D I A. That's another founder JOB in 2024. 4. Resource Constraints: Using minimal resources against competitors with unlimited resources can feel like setting up $1 locks to fend off dinosaurs. The odds seem insurmountable. How I handle this: If people do great work and continue to show up in hard times, do everything you can to make them the heroes of the park/movie. (startup) All your ideas/plans are garbage until one idea starts working - you have to constantly be simplifying everything. Bryan Lord might be the best at this I have seen. He will painfully strip your ideas, words and products down into a single focus. (painful for many time founders, with big visions but it's 100% required) *stick your ego in your backpocket. You know how this process works? It's like writing a book. You write 100000 pages, your write 100 versions, You end up with an editor who takes it down to 200 pages, you publish it and you get positive and negative. You have to be resilient enough to handle all the bad press, all the BS, all the negativity, all. This is why everyone whose worth being your co-founder knows to celebrate any/all small wins. Everyone smart knows this.

Tarpit ideas: ideas that seem good — almost too good to be true — but have been tried by many with little to no success. Tarpit ideas are often not hard in obvious ways. They might seem so easy and good that it's unbelievable that no one has done it. Why is it called a “tarpit”? It’s a nod to the petroleum tar pits that paleontologists love to explore because they’re a good place to find fossils. Animals would confuse the shiny tar for fresh water and try to take a drink… only to fall in, get stuck, and meet their demise. Worse yet: the smell of their body would attract other animals who’d meet the same fate! How can I avoid tarpit ideas? If your idea has been tried before, do your research and understand why it didn’t work. Assume the people who tried before were very smart, very determined people; what’s different now?
