🎉 A Tremendous Success: Exploring AI and the Billable Hour! 🎉 I’m thrilled to share that our recent ILTA roundtable on AI and the Billable Hour was a huge success, with over 200 registered professionals, we had such an engaging and thought-provoking discussion! 🚀 Key Takeaways from the Roundtable: 💡 AI & Legal Work Allocation – Jonathan Selvadoray pointed out that AI and the billable hour are not mutually exclusive. While AI automates routine tasks, it enhances rather than replaces legal work—freeing up lawyers to focus on more complex, high-value matters. 📊 Strategic AI Use – Balanand Menon shared insights from the Indian legal market, where AI is optimizing high-volume tasks like due diligence, allowing firms to focus on advisory and negotiation work. 👥 The Future of AI & Client Relationships – AI is already influencing how legal teams interact with their clients. Greg Lambert noted that firms need to think strategically about who truly benefits financially from AI adoption—law firms, clients, or vendors selling AI tools. With AI becoming an integral part of legal services, law firms must determine how to deliver value while adapting their pricing strategies. 💲 Legal Billing Models Are Evolving – The panel explored how AI could accelerate the shift to alternative fee arrangements, as firms balance AI-driven insights with traditional billing structures. 📈 Leveraging Data & AI in Legal Work – Greg Lambert emphasized that AI presents a major opportunity to enhance matter management and legal analytics. AI is helping law firms better capture, structure, and leverage their data—turning fragmented billing and knowledge systems into powerful decision-making tools. This shift aligns with broader industry trends in standardization, predictive pricing, and operational efficiency. 🔹 A Special Shout-Out 🔹 A huge thank you to my co-star and co-pilot, Shreya Vajpei, for her incredible work in organizing this roundtable and for creating a brilliant visualization of our discussion. Her post maps out the AI-driven transformation of legal billing, illustrating how technology is bridging traditional billing models with value-driven approaches. Be sure to check it out on her profile page! 👏 Gratitude to Our Expert Panel A big thank you to Greg Lambert, Balanand Menon, and Jonathan Selvadoray for sharing their expertise—your insights made this discussion truly impactful! 🔗 Missed it live? During my long flight to Orlando, I finished a fantastic book by Richard Susskind and Daniel Susskind titled "The Future of Professions". In the book the authors are debating the hypothesis wether professions as a concept will become extinct and whether in a day and age where knowledge is available everywhere, do we still agree that the only way to obtain this knowledge is consulting a professional? It seems obvious in professions like doctors (however, AI can help doctors with more accurate diagnosis, especially when it comes to interpreting medical imaging), but when it comes to lawyers and tax advisors, we're not that clear. The authors are highlighting the concept of routine and non-routine activities and put forward a proposal that the routine activities are the first in line to be taken over by AI. We already know this is possible and there are companies in the space that are successfully pushing the boundaries of what's possible, i.e. - Robin AI for co-piloting while drafting legal documents, - Blue J for supporting with tax research, - ArmsLength AI - AI tool helping with transfer pricing analysis, Congratulations for building great products and contributing to the legaltech and tax tech AI revolution 👏 Richard Robinson Benjamin Alarie Borys Ulanenko As for the book, it made my flight to Orlando a breeze 🛫🌴 as a someone who exited the legal profession into tech, made me feel really excited to be in the space! #lovetax #taxtech #legaltech

If it can be done for lawyers in general, it can be done for tax professionals (which includes some lawyers as well as accountants). It's another step in the general normalisation of genAI tech across the various segments of the economy. Soon enough, not using genAI tools will simply mean you are slower and harder to work with. Congrats to LexisNexis + Tolley on the project. HT Matthew Leopold LINK: https://lnkd.in/ed-9RcJB #legaltech #taxtech #genAI #onedayeveryonewillbeusinggenAIforprofessionaltasks

Heard recently: “We’re making a major investment to replace our practice management system (with another traditional law firm specific alternative)” A familiar story—law firms committing $10s of millions to upgrade to the next iteration of a traditional ERP/PMS or, as in this case, replace it with another one. No doubt, a necessary step in keeping operations running smoothly. But when scalable, agile, AI-native technology—the same technology their own clients are deploying—is recommended, the responses are sometimes: 🚫 "Not until our peers do it" 🚫 "We just want what we know" 🚫 "Our partners don’t like change", or "They miss their old system!" This raises a bigger question. Are some law firms investing for the future, or just reinforcing the past? Corporate clients are transforming their businesses with AI platforms that deliver integrated, real-time insights, natural language decision-making, and seamless integration. They’re not just upgrading their tech—they’re changing how they work, seeing quick and meaningful ROI, and making the lives of their people easier and their tasks more efficient. Meanwhile, many law firms continue a cycle of costly, monolithic system replacements because it feels like the safer choice. But safe isn’t always smart. Here’s the reality: 🔹 AI platforms evolve and scale without the need for massive system overhauls. 🔹 They deliver instant, intuitive insights without requiring users to fight through dashboards. 🔹 They integrate with existing tech, rather than forcing firms into rigid, one-size-fits-all structures. If clients are moving at AI speed, how long before they start questioning why their legal advisors aren’t? Is it time to rethink what future-ready really means? #LegalTech #AI #Innovation #LawFirmManagement

🤖⚖️Explore the impacts of #GenAI for both law firms and in-house teams with Legal Dive! In a recent interview, Justin Bachman, Senior Reporter at Legal Dive, spoke with Rhys Hodkinson, Chief Revenue Officer at Definely, about how AI is reshaping the legal industry. They discussed the growing shift towards a “self-serve” model and how new tools are transforming both in-house teams and law firms: 🔹 In-house teams are using AI to automate low-value tasks, focusing on more complex work. 🔹 Growing resistance to billable hour models as in-house teams seek efficiency. 🔹 Self-service legal tools are empowering non-legal staff to handle basic tasks, reducing outside counsel reliance. Read the interview here: https://lnkd.in/gGu6yMWn 🎯LIC 4.0 is excited to continue these discussions in 2025, with dedicated Private Practice and In-House Days to explore how AI is shaping the future of legal work! ▶️ Pre-register for Legal Innovators California 2025 today: https://lnkd.in/ge5UjWH9 #LegalInnovatorsCalifornia #LegalTech #Innovation #Networking #LegalProfession
