Recently completed by Squadron Nostalgia: The 18-inch model of the SC-1311 and SC-497 Class Submarine Chaser, a specialized naval vessel designed for anti-submarine warfare during World War II. The SC-497 Class was based on a wooden-hulled design, which was chosen for its ease of construction and availability of materials during wartime. They were relatively small vessels, typically around 110 feet in length. SC-497 Class submarine chasers were powered by diesel engines, which provided them with a maximum speed of around 15 knots. This speed, combined with their relatively small size, allowed them to maneuver quickly and effectively in the often challenging conditions of the open ocean. After World War II, some SC-497 Class submarine chasers were decommissioned and sold off or scrapped, while others were transferred to allied navies or repurposed for civilian use. #OTD, 10/11/1968, US Navy F-111B BuNo 151974 crashed at Pt Mugu California, ending the F-111B program completely. The aircraft was designed to be a carrier based long range interceptor replacing the F-4 Phantom. It first flew in 1965 and went through three years of testing and trials however it was plagued by excessive weight and being underpowered, as well as not achieving goals set forth by the USN such as dog-fighting capabilities. As the negative results continued to pile up, Congress pulled funding for the project, but Grumman had a back up plan, Model 303, which became the F-14 Tomcat! Of the seven F-111B aircraft built, four crashed, two were scrapped, and one is at NAWS China Lake, CA. One of the key aspects of their success was the use of specialized construction equipment, which played a vital role in the logistics and execution of their operations. The Battle for Iwo Jima is a prime example where construction equipment was crucial. The Marines faced a formidable task: capturing an island heavily fortified by the Japanese. To achieve this, they relied on a variety of construction equipment to build landing strips, fortifications, and other essential infrastructure. For instance, bulldozers, cranes, and other heavy machinery were used to clear paths through the rugged terrain, remove obstacles, and construct defensive positions. This equipment was essential for the rapid construction of airfields, which were critical for providing close air support and a base for fighter escorts supporting long-range bombing missions against mainland Japan. The use of construction equipment by the Marine Corps during WWII highlights the importance of logistics and engineering in warfare. It demonstrates how, beyond the front-line combat, there are layers of strategic operations that contribute significantly to the outcome of battles. "17 July 1989: the first Northrop B-2A Spirit, 82-1066, took off from Air Force Plant 42, Palmdale, California, on its first flight. The crew was Northrop Chief Test Pilot Bruce J. Hinds and Colonel Richard Couch, United States Air Force. The top secret “stealth bomber” #prototype landed at Edwards Air Force Base 1 hour, 52 minutes later. After completing the flight test program, -1066 was placed in storage until 1993, awaiting upgrade to the Block 10 operational configuration. In 2000 it was again upgraded to the Block 30 standard. It is now named Spirit of America and assigned to the 509th Bomb Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri. The Northrop Grumman B-2A Spirit is an advanced #technology long-range heavy bomber. It can perform both tactical or strategic missions. It features extremely low radar observabilty. The bomber features the “flying wing” concept, pioneered by the #Northrop XB-35 in 1946. In addition to its “stealthy” configuration, the B-2A is also highly aerodynamically efficient. The B-2A has a crew of two pilots. According to data released by the #USAirForce, the bomber is 69 feet (21 meters) long, with a wingspan of 172 feet (52.4 meters) and height of 17 feet (5.2 meters). Its empty weight is 160,000 pounds (72.5 tons), with a maximum takeoff weight of 336,500 pounds." (to be continued in the article...) Here’s a photo to boost the national pride of any country – too bad that country isn’t Canada. Instead, the beating hearts of our Australian cousins must be bursting, as a flight of state-of-the-art aircraft pass over an All-Australian naval task force. Canada is incapable of organizing a similar photo opportunity – not even close! Rather than the brand-new Boeing Wedgetail electronic control aircraft leading a pack of Super Hornets, the best we could muster would be a propellor driven Lockheed Aurora sub hunter, a class of warplane that entered service in 1980. While the CF-18 Hornets we could send aloft are the earliest versions possible, a warplane that first entered the RCAF’s ranks in 1982 – long before any of its pilots were even born. As far as the naval element in the photo is concerned, we have nothing comparable. A handful of 30-year-old frigates make up the bulk of our maritime defense capabilities, and of those only a few could go to sea if called upon. Canada has a population of nearly 39 million, while Australia’s population barely tops 26 million, yet it’s obvious that it is far more serious about defending itself, and of playing an ever-greater role on the world stage than Canada is. Generations of government neglect, public apathy, a rose-tinted viewpoint about the state of the world and a passive belief that “the Americans will always protect us” has allowed our military to crumble into obsolescence and impotence. Canada once had a hard earned place at the high table, now we’ve been relegated to the children’s table, while the adults make all the decisions – including those that will impact us. #military #canada #weakness
