A little over three years ago, I discovered the world of recruiting. With only a heart for people, a laptop, and a phone-line......we were in business. 😄 I really did not know what I was doing and felt like a little fish in a big pond at times. But my pastor always says "You cannot grow if you stay in your comfort zone". My wife and I started Pillar Staffing Solutions with the simple desire to help people find jobs. We wanted people to be able to be a Pillar in their workplaces, families, and communities; we wanted to assist in providing tools and resources for people to impact this world in a positive way. Who knew that simply trying to meet needs would turn into a full time career. Only through Jesus did we make it through! 🙏🏾 Fast forward to today, we've conducted thousands of interviews, reviewed thousands of resumes, and have staffed/placed 100's of talented individuals. We've made lasting partnerships that have been win-win situations, and we've seen countless times the joy that comes from landing a new role with a great company. Why do I love being a recruiter? Well there are a lot of reasons. It's super cool I get to have a hand in company success and development, finding necessary and essential people to tackle awesome projects. But the BEST part is the impact I get to have on individuals on both sides of the hiring process. On the business side, I make life easier for hiring managers and their team. On the candidate side, I get to be part of a major life decision - helping land that next dream job. The common denominator - HELPING PEOPLE. And through it all, I love getting to know people and developing lasting relationships. This means listening to their stories, learning about their experience, discovering what motives them, and more. Yeah, recruiting has its uphill battles, just like any profession. 🌐 **Navigating the Shifting Tides of Recruitment: A Reflection** 🌐 In the era of the pandemic, it was customary for candidates to engage with recruiters directly on LinkedIn. This practice, once considered normal, facilitated swift communication and project implementation. Fast forward to the current job market, characterized by crises, mass layoffs, and a surplus of candidates seeking opportunities in project management and recruitment. From my personal journey, I've noticed a significant transformation. In my months-long job search, I've shifted my focus towards direct contact. However, the prevailing market conditions seem to have altered the dynamics. The more the job market deteriorates, the more I perceive a reluctance among recruiters to engage with candidates directly. There's a prevailing sentiment that reaching out directly makes an applicant appear desperate or intrusive. Yet, how can one not feel a sense of urgency after months of job hunting, with familial and financial responsibilities? I firmly believe that the act of reaching out independently should not diminish the value, skills, or knowledge of a candidate. In fact, it's an endeavor to stand out amidst a sea of CVs, a proactive approach in challenging times. On this note, I'd like to echo an observation shared by others navigating similar paths. In these challenging times, recruiters can play a pivotal role by acknowledging the courage and determination it takes for candidates to initiate direct contact. Each message tells a story of resilience, encompassing the challenges of unemployment, family obligations, and financial pressures. Embracing direct communication is not just about connecting with a CV; it's about understanding the person behind it. Recruiters have the opportunity to contribute to a more compassionate and human-centric hiring process. In a job market saturated with resumes, recognizing the personal journey of each applicant can lead to discovering exceptional talent that might have otherwise been overlooked. Let's not forget that, in times of crisis, a compassionate approach to recruitment goes beyond filling job vacancies; it positively impacts the lives of job seekers and contributes to building a more empathetic and resilient professional community. "Failed recruiter" Working agency side, the stereotype when any recruiter moves to the "other side" (aka going internal) is that they simply "can't hack it" or they must just want an "easier life". I'd seen Grace Moorhouse post about this forever existing (and ridiculous) narrative at the start of her journey going internal too (please take a look at her post - it's so well articulated!! 👏) I found comfort in her words so I reached out to her directly, as well as to a few other great internal talent partners in my network. The real narrative is that great recruiters go internal to shape and influence the candidate experience and actually see the positive impact on the people they help hire. I'd watched incredible recruiters I've personally worked with make the move (shoutout to: Izzy Morgan-Davies, Charlotte Baker and Gina Sumner 💙) and wanted to see if it was the right thing for me too. I'm now one month into my talent journey at 2i (how?!🤯) with 0 regrets. I'm super proud of what I've been able to get involved with so far thanks to the amazing 2i team (John Holt in particular!) 🤝We've worked together to help shape and prioritise our current talent strategy. 🤞I've got my first offer (pending) for someone really great to join us! ✅We've created a proactive talent pipeline for a few historically tricky roles ✨I've ran a LinkedIn and Content intro/ training session 💙I became a Mentor for the first time in partnership with CodeSpace! Working internal is by no means easy. The scope and breadth of my involvement is growing week on week. The same "recruitment headaches" of course remain with a whole host of new challenges to problem solve on top 😰 The best part... I'm actually able to see the impact my efforts have on the candidates I'm supporting and on the wider business. Thank you to the amazing internal talent in my network who have dropped me messages of encouragement, support and shared your pearls of wisdom with me (you know who you are 🙏) Bare with me whilst I'm still finding my new feet, being internal does not mean I've put my feet up 🤣 and I have about 200+ messages I'm making my way through! #recruitment #hiring

Long, drawn out hiring processes are a nightmare. And you don't need to accept them. There are enough companies who can interview and hire in a couple of weeks. If a company wants you to use up lots of free time and engage in a 6 month hiring process, don't be rude to them. Just invest your time with smart companies who understand fast hiring is crucial. Because in a competitive market, if a company hires slowly, then their competitors will get all the top talent. And they'll be left with the leftovers. Makes sense.
