The main problem with rPET supply is that it depends on consumer behavior AND the infrastructure to recycle the material. There is a huge industry shortage. Coke is getting clever with a Circular Plastics Case Competition. The theme this year is how to increase recycling of PET (which is recycled into rPET). Coca-Cola owns their own bottle recycling facilities so they have a stake in improving the recycling rates for bottles. The closer an organization is to a problem, the more they understand it and can leverage their brand to create change. Nicely done, looking forward to seeing the results! The new facility will process flexible plastics typically used in food packaging. These ‘hard-to-recycle’ plastics will be converted into pellets which can be used to make new flexible products such as postbags and refuse bags. The site will have the capacity to take 25,000 tonnes of this plastic, a figure which surpasses the amount of flexible plastic packaging Nestlé UK and Ireland produce. The pellets can be used to replace virgin plastic films in construction and agriculture as well as to make bin bags. David Walsh, CEO of Impact Recycling, said: “We are delighted to partner with Nestle on this initiative to develop a 25,000-tonne commercial recycling plant for post-consumer flexible plastic. Without the funding from Nestlé, this development would not have been possible.” #Nestlé #Sustainability #Recycling #UK #Investment #Initiative

Nestlé Puts Resources Into Plastics Recycling The CPG giant is investing $8.8 million in the facility. A new plastic recycling plant is set to open in Durham, North England, with a significant investment from Nestlé UK and Ireland. The innovative process, known as Baffled Oscillation Separation System, or BOSS, sorts the waste plastics by spinning them in water, meaning that different materials either sink or float, depending on their density. This makes it easier to take the correct materials to be recycled. #Nestlé #Impact_Recycling #Recycling #BOSS #hard_to_recycle #flexible_plastics https://lnkd.in/giesfBQQ

Australia has set the goal for 70% of #plasticpackaging to be #recycled or composted by 2025, and for unnecessary single-use plastic packaging to be phased out. One worthy recipient of this initiative is Circular Plastics Australia (a joint venture between Pact Group Holdings Ltd, Cleanaway Waste Management, Asahi Beverages and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners), which with the additional support of the Australian Government's Recycling Modernisation Fund, constructed a new Pet Plastics Ltd. About the 100%* rPET bottles, how can this be sustained in the long run? Given that the quality of the plastic decreases as it is reycled and can only be recycled a certain number of times, wouldn't it be more strategic for the entire industry to aim for a certain percentage recycled content, for example 50%? It won't be possible for all new bottles to be 100% rPET without relying on chemical recycling. Or does the strategy assume chemical recycling to play a big role in the future of rPET? As reuse is higher up the waste hierarchy than recycle, kudos to Swire Coca-Cola HK for expanding their glass bottle line in HK last year to provide more refillable bottles for sodas and water. Can you share what percentage of your sales in HK by package is in refillable packaging? Oceana Dana Miller Plastic Free Seas Drink Without Waste New Life Plastics Ltd Helga Vanthournout

INSIGHT: Recycled polystyrene wants its place at the table for food-contact applications One of the key challenges for recycled plastics in Europe is gaining the approval for recycled food packaging items to be used into new food packaging items, reducing virgin plastic usage, and creating a closed loop system. ECO & Market Development Manager at INEOS Styrolution, Frank Eisentrager, explained to ICIS’ Senior Recycling Editor Matt Tudball why R-PS is the perfect candidate for food-contact applications, the challenge of getting food approval and how the up-coming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) could help the R-PS market grow. #ICIS #polystyrene #RPS #recycling #plastic #PPWR #SCS #EFSA #packaging #PET #RPET #polypropylene #polyethylene https://bit.ly/3ShnYqz

Good to see this advance in the use of rPET, following Watson's Water's move to 100% rPET bottles in 2018. We would all like to know if the pre-forms are made in Hong Kong. If not, where is the material collected from Hong Kong, sent to for processing? If pre-forms are not made in Hong Kong, why is that? Is there is a regulatory hurdle somewhere standing in the way of this circular economy? It would be great for all readers to know either way. The simple introduction of 100% rPET bottles into the Hong Kong market does not lead to an improvement in the local collection system and people's desires to be part of a new, scaled collection program, without inspiring incentives, which to date, do not yet exist.
