I've been meaning to write a more comprehensive article about this topic, and I definitely will someday. But for now, I hope this message resonates with someone who needs to hear it today.
Today marks 27 years of sobriety for me. Every time it appears on the calendar, it brings a quiet and serene smile to my face, reminding me of the strength I found within myself to overcome incredible challenges. It's a testament to the decision I made and the relentless, white-knuckle effort I put in to build the life I knew was possible, without alcohol.
I wouldn't be here today without the significant support I received in various ways. I'm especially grateful to a friend who confronted and pushed me 27 years ago. Years later, when I thanked her again, she humbly replied, 'I was just there to hold your hand for a while. You did all the hard work.' It's important to acknowledge the support, but also to recognize that yes, I did the work. The incredibly hard work.
So, for those of you who offer support and hold our hands during difficult times, thank you. And for those of you who are doing the work or aspire to do so, keep going. I didn't quit drinking the first time I tried. Or the second. Or the third. Or even the fourth... But eventually, one day turned into two days, which turned into three days...and then into 27 years.
Never give up. Never think you can't quit something that is hindering your life, relationships, career, and health.
Remember, whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right. Choose, "I can." Choose it repeatedly, until it becomes your reality.
If you're facing addiction, start your journey today by searching for support resources in your area. Simply open up a search engine and type in 'support for (alcohol, gambling, cigarettes, eating disorders, etc) in my area.
Make a decision to take that first step. Today.
