Shooting this documentary on Idanre Hill was a rewarding experience, but not without its challenges. One of the initial difficulties was simply navigating my way to the town. Finding the right motor park to get there was more difficult than expected, especially with limited information on transportation options. Upon arriving in Idanre, another challenge was knowing who to approach for directions to the top of the hill. As a first-time visitor, identifying the right people to ask for help took time. Fortunately, the local people were very welcoming and eager to assist when I explained my purpose for visiting—the hill and its rich history. One of the most memorable parts of the experience was the physical challenge of climbing the Great Steps. Scaling the 616 steps was no small feat and felt like a workout, but it was a unique way to connect with the environment. As I ascended, the peaceful atmosphere and natural surroundings stood out. The silence was profound, making it a perfect setting for meditation. The soft chirping of birds added to the serenity, making the climb more reflective than strenuous. Reaching the top of the hill brought a deeper connection to history and culture. Walking through old structures and seeing artifacts that have stood the test of time, I could sense the richness of the Idanre people's heritage. Each building had a story, each object a significance, linking the past to the present. These historical landmarks highlighted the importance of tradition and the deep-rooted culture of the people. Through this journey, I gained valuable insights into the traditions of the Idanre people, their ancient ways, and the significance of their history. It reinforced in me the belief that Africans, and indeed all people, should take more interest in learning about their cultural heritage. Traditional burial plots are leased for a limited period, typically 15 years, after which the remains are exhumed, and the family can choose to cremate the remains or reinter them in a smaller, more space-efficient columbarium niche. Columbariums are common in Singapore, where urns containing the cremated remains are stored in specially designed buildings that maximize space. Another innovative practice in Singapore is sea burial, where the ashes of the deceased are scattered at sea. This method is chosen by families looking for a more environmentally friendly and space-saving alternative to traditional burials. The government has also introduced "green burial" options, where biodegradable urns are used to store ashes, which are then buried in designated garden spaces, allowing the ashes to naturally return to the earth. Japan: Japan, like Singapore, faces significant land constraints, leading to the adoption of modern and space-efficient burial practices. One of the most notable developments is the rise of "rental tombs" and "shukatsu" (end-of-life planning). In cities, where space is at a premium, families can rent a tomb for a specified period, after which the remains are either transferred to a communal ossuary or cremated. This practice is becoming increasingly popular as it reduces the burden of maintaining a family grave over generations. Additionally, Japan has embraced technological innovations in memorialization. Robotic grave attendants, such as those found in Tokyo's Ruriden columbarium, use technology to store and display urns. Visitors can use a card to access their loved one's urn, which is illuminated in a serene, futuristic environment. Japan also offers digital memorial services where families can create online spaces to honor the deceased, reflecting the country's integration of tradition with modern technology.
