I imagine there are holes to pick in the evidence presented by Matthew Pennycook and Joanna Key to the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee this morning, on planning for 1.5 million new homes. I'll leave that to others - I'm a glass half full type. Can we deliver 1.5m new homes in the next five years? "I am absolutely confident it can be achieved," Matthew said. It will take the full five years, and it's an upward trajectory rather than 370,000 houses every year. "We've lots more to do but we've made the first decisive steps." In my role on 1.5M New Homes: The Local Government Challenge, I was struck by Matthew's acknowledgement that, in the 1960s and '70s, the reason we built affordable and social housing at scale was partly because local authorities played a much larger role. "We need to set them up so they make far more of a contribution." We're providing a platform for the practitioners to say how they can do that: council-by-council case studies of what works, and what doesn't, in delivering new homes. Delighted to see NSW’s political leaders have proposed a “bi-partisan roundtable” to combat the housing crisis, as outlined in the below article in the The Sydney Morning Herald. Our CEO Andrew McAnulty has long advocated for a bi-partisan approach to housing, arguing that it’s an issue too big and too important to become a “political football”. We commend both sides of government for coming together to solve this issue.
