Head of Global Multi-Asset and Chief Investment Officer at T. Rowe Price | Author: “The Psychology of Leadership” (Harriman House)
My first summer job was in general building maintenance. My friend and I worked for a real estate mogul who owned various commercial and residential buildings across the city. We swept parking lots, cleaned factories, mowed lawns, painted apartments, and so on. None of these tasks were particularly engaging. And, because this was my first job, I hadn’t developed a work ethic, which is another way of saying I was lazy. I would count the minutes between breaks. But sometimes, I would get in the groove, and time would fly. Looking back, the number one contributor to my engagement in a task was how easy it was to notice progress. Some tasks seemed senseless – for example, sweeping a parking lot or cleaning a factory where we barely made a dent and couldn’t see progress. However, I enjoyed mowing lawns and painting apartments because the goal was clear (to finish the task), and I could track progress in real-time. I could eyeball the percentage completed. That’s immediate feedback. There’s something satisfying about seeing the immediate impact of your work toward a well-defined, attainable goal. Videogames use this principle. If you're a leader who oversees entry-level jobs, can you create visible, attainable progress metrics and milestones? #selfimprovement #leadership Photo from Unsplash

🚨 ATTN Cleveland-Area Engineers, Architects, and Facilities Managers—I need your help! 🚨 I’d like to start a Cleveland chapter of the BIG - Building Intelligence Group . Not familiar with BIG? The Building Intelligence Group (BIG) is a cross disciplinary education, support, and networking organization dedicated to delivering data-driven solutions to maximize value for everyone that interacts with the built environment. The catch? I need 5-10 professionals that currently work in the smart building space to join me on BIG CLE’s Steering Committee. We will meet virtually to follow the 30-60-90-day Action Plan for starting a local chapter. The Steering Committee will decide on the local chapter structure, meeting cadence and location, meeting topics, and other ideas to attract members. More and more BIG chapters are popping up across the country, so this is a great opportunity to get involved with a rapidly growing industry organization. Especially good for remote workers or those in the early phase of their career, getting involved and starting a local BIG chapter provides a unique opportunity to build leadership skills, network with others in the industry, and make valuable connections. Leave a comment below and I’ll follow up with more info!

Experience matters no matter the arena of business you are in experience always matters most and the BEST Leaders recognize the value talent and experience brings to the table!
Vice President of Operations, Transportation $285K Director of Health and Safety, Construction $185K Senior Project Manager, Manufacturing $165K Manager of Sales and Operations, Automotive $245K Vice President of Guest Relations, Hospitality $135K Senior Distribution Manager, Retail $162K What do all these things have in common? First, these are all job offers recent clients of ours accepted. Second, every single one of these people do not possess a Bachelor's Degree. I’ll wait while you clutch your pearls. Yep, somehow these brave souls dared to apply for, and land, six-figure jobs without that oh-so-necessary degree. The nerve that they apply for and win jobs over $100K. Over and over. Tell me again how "degrees equal success. It doesn't. It never will. A good resume is way more than just a piece of paper. It's your Power Move. #SixFigureJobs #NoDegreeNoProblem #ResumeWriting

Reflecting on this photo from earlier this year in North Scottsdale at Cavasson, I’m reminded of the journey each construction project represents for Brien Contracting. Every project has its challenges, but the morning light captured here reminds me of the importance of perspective in business ownership, especially in the construction industry. It’s easy to get bogged down in the daily grind, but a simple shift in perspective can reveal positives that were always there. Here's how I lead my teams to remain focused: • Encourage Taking a Step Back: When projects feel overwhelming, I urge my team to pause and gain some distance. It often provides a clearer view and fresh perspective. • Promote Team Input: I foster an environment where team members can share their insights. Often, they bring up solutions or opportunities that we might not have considered. This also includes taking responsibility quickly when unforeseen circumstances arise. • Emphasize Clear Communication: I ensure that everyone understands the importance of direct and specific communication, making sure our needs and expectations are crystal clear. This photo serves as a reminder of what can be achieved when we focus on the light and let the shadows fall behind us. What tips can you share which help guide your teams to remain focused? #generalcontractor #commercialconstruction #arizonarealestate
