Firefighters took advantage of a brief pause in the strong winds that have been sweeping the area to set up barriers and address hot spots of fallen trees and dense grass. Thursday’s rain and snow provided a brief respite with some moisture before the air is expected to dry out on Friday, and high winds are forecasted to return over the weekend, according to Steve Hannah, a meteorologist based in Amarillo with the National Weather Service. He predicted that gusts could reach up to 40 miles per hour by Sunday. The Smokehouse Creek Fire has now ravaged an area larger than Rhode Island. ADOT was pleased to participate recently in an event to help spread the word about things we can all do to reduce the occurrence of wildfires. Earlier this month at the Sunset Point Rest Area along Interstate 17, ADOT joined the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, Bureau of Land Management, USDA Forest Service and Arizona Department of Public Safety at a wildland fire prevention day event. At the event, wildland prevention officers and others handed out flyers, posters, small first-aid kits, sticker sheets and more to motorists who passed through the rest area with information about how to prevent wildland fires. Smokey Bear made an appearance, too. According to data gathered by ADFFM’s Arizona Dispatch Center, in 2023, agencies responded to nearly 500 roadside fires, which accounted for 26% of all wildfires in the state. If you’re planning on taking a road trip this summer, remember these tips to help prevent wildfires: 🔥 Avoid parking your vehicle on dry grass or driving through tall grass because heat from the underside of your vehicle can start a fire. 🔥Never throw a cigarette out of a vehicle. 🔥Make sure trailer chains are securely attached. Loose chains can drag on the pavement, shooting sparks off the road and into dry brush and grass. 🔥Check tire pressure before you travel. Exposed wheel rims can cause sparks on the asphalt.

MAINE WILDFIRE AWARENESS WEEK Week of April 14 - 20, 2024 WHEREAS, forests cover over eighty-nine percent of Maine's land, defining our environment and contributing to our high quality of life; and WHEREAS, these healthy, productive forests provide employment and sustain the state's two leading industries, forest products and tourism; and WHEREAS, for more than a century the State of Maine has been a national leader in forest fire control and prevention, and in 1891 established the Maine Forest Service to combat forest fires; and WHEREAS, Maine averages over 600 wildfires annually, over ninety percent of which are caused by people, destroying valuable natural resources, property, and threatening human life; and WHEREAS, the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry's Forest ProtectionDivision and municipal fire departments need the support of every resident and visitor to prevent wildfires; NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Janet T. Mills, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim the week of April 14-20, 2024 as WILDFIRE AWARENESS WEEK throughout the State of Maine, and I urge all citizens to do their part to prevent wildfires.
