National Mutt Day is an annual event celebrated on both July 31st and December 2nd. It was created to raise awareness about the many mixed-breed dogs in shelters and to promote their adoption. Here are some key points about National Mutt Day: Purpose: The main goal of National Mutt Day is to promote the adoption of mixed-breed dogs, also known as mutts, from shelters and rescue organizations. It aims to shed light on the high number of mutts waiting for forever homes and to encourage people to consider adopting them. History: National Mutt Day was founded by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige in 2005. Paige is also the creator of other animal-related holidays, such as National Dog Day and National Cat Day. Celebrations: On National Mutt Day, people are encouraged to visit their local animal shelters or rescue organizations to adopt a mixed-breed dog. It is also a day to celebrate and appreciate the unique qualities of mutts, as well as educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering pets. Benefits of adopting mutts: Mixed-breed dogs often have a diverse genetic background, which can make them healthier and less prone to certain genetic health issues compared to purebred dogs. They also come in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and personalities, making them unique and one-of-a-kind companions. How to participate: If you are considering adopting a dog, National Mutt Day is an excellent opportunity to find your new furry friend. You can visit local shelters or rescue organizations, or even check online platforms that connect potential adopters with available mutts. Donations to animal shelters or volunteering your time are also great ways to support the cause. In our industry, we've (rightfully) talked a lot about the decrease in dog adoptions that has happened since the pandemic. But one are that has flown under the radar is the drop in Return-to-Owner/Return-to-home rates for dogs. Most of us would agree that in most cases, if a pet is lost, the best outcome scenario for that pet (and the shelter) is for them to be returned home. Even though strays as a percentage of intake is increasing, return-to-home as a percentage of outcomes has decreased for municipal shelters - down 3.6 percentage points as a percent of total intakes and down 7.4 points as a percent of stray intake. For shelters across the country, this is literally hundreds, or even thousands fewer dogs returned home than in 2019, before the pandemic. And data is showing that RTH is continuing to decrease in 2024. Today is the first day of #Dogust - the perfect month to celebrate your dog and the dogs looking for homes. Additionally, since 2008, August 1st has been designated as the holiday "Dogust", a nationwide celebration for dogs whose birthdays are unknown. This holiday came about when staff at the North Shore Animal League America set out to ensure even dogs without official birthdays still get their own special day. Stay tuned all month as we be share ways community members came together to spoil our resident dogs during their universal birthday month. Pets like Petunia, who has been waiting since January 2023 for her new home, appreciate the extra attention. You can get in on the fun of Dogust by spoiling the dogs in your life with new toys, tasty treats, or taking them on a fun adventure. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the legislation in December 2022, but the new law doesn't take effect until December 2024. Puppies, kittens and bunnies can no longer be sold in pet shops. December 31, 2024, is just around the corner. Has any major organization made a public statement about the well-being of animals that are unsold on this day, the last day of December? One year ago, I asked this question in the same forum just out of curiosity. If anybody has been putting a plan together and has not received a solid response, I shall ask the question again. Is anyone aware of any major organization or rescue organization? If our rescues and shelters are red-lining and beyond capacity, where will all the puppies, kittens, and rabbits in New York State end up? What is the plan to ensure the well-being of unsold dogs, kittens, puppies, and rabbits left in stores on December 31, and why has this plan not been made public so volunteers/fosters can offer to help?
