Adults’ attitudes about children have changed to ‘fortunate’, ‘tech savvy’ and ‘honest’ and less ‘selfish’, ‘lazy’ or ‘spoilt’ according to new research into adults’ attitudes towards children. The Exploring Australian Adults’ Attitudes Towards Children for a Better Future 2023, which surveyed 1008 adults across Australia, was commissioned by the Valuing Children Initiative and conducted by The University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University and Curtin University compared results from the same survey conducted in 2016. The report made six recommendations including new mechanisms to amplify children’s voices, greater support for families to facilitate children’s development, school-based programs that empower children, better advocacy for children’s rights and further research that impact children’s lives. In 2022, @theconversation.aunz asked 130 children aged between 7 and 13 years what makes communities strong, supportive and fair to determine what a “fair go” looks like for Australian children. In the research, 5 key themes that matter were identified in determining whether they have a fair go or not. Children’s rights in Europe: Eurochild’s review of the 2019-2024 EU institutional cycle Throughout the 2019-2024 EU institutional cycle, the EU institutions played a crucial role in upholding children’s rights amid global challenges such as COVID-19, geopolitical conflicts, and high inflation. Key achievements include the EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child, the European Child Guarantee, and initiatives linked to mental health and education, including early childhood education and care. The EU also focused on improving child protection standards both online and offline, and providing inclusive support for children with disabilities. On the eve of the EU elections, this Eurochild resource underscores the key initiatives impacting children's rights that Eurochild has been supporting during the last legislative cycle. ɪᴍᴘʀᴏᴠɪɴɢ ᴘᴏʟɪᴄʏ ᴅᴇᴠᴇʟᴏᴘᴍᴇɴᴛ ᴀɴᴅ ɪᴍᴘʟᴇᴍᴇɴᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴ ꜰᴏʀ ᴄʜɪʟᴅʀᴇɴ👧🏽👲🏽 Many countries, especially developing and underdeveloped ones, have frequently undertaken initiatives to better serve the country for the benefit of the nation's future, with children being the primary focus of these efforts. However, a notable fraction of what has been proposed is rarely achieved successfully. This is evidently a problem. How do we navigate this issue? Here is my perspective: 1⃣Involve children📌. A lot of countries face this challenge because they do not consult the subjects of the policies they create. Engage children in the formulation of policies. Of course, this does not mean that countries should allow children to draft legislation or policies, but rather engage them indirectly through open discussions and debates on key issues. That way, the policies will serve the children of the present and future, not the bygone era. 2⃣Facilitate education beyond the classroom.📌 There are many CSOs and NGOs that have direct access to children, with their benchmarks focusing on children's well-being. These can be the channels through which messages and topics such as human rights, environmental management, climate change, sustainability, and inclusion, among others, can be discussed. The challenge faced in many homes is that unlike in the past, fewer children are engaged in such meaningful conversations, thus shutting off the source that (1) above speaks to. 3⃣Stick to the plan and respond to the needs of children as laid down in your policies. 🚨New CenHTRO Publication in the journal Global Policy Unveiling Child Trafficking: Local perspectives and context in addressing sustainable development goals in Sierra Leone "Global efforts to combat child trafficking have been on the rise in recent years but local norms and context play a huge role in what kinds of work are perceived as acceptable for children. This article presents new evidence from research carried out in Sierra Leone with key informants, community leaders, and those with lived experience of exploitation. It asks how local stakeholders understand child trafficking, and the distinction between child labor and child work.
