This incredible journey wasn't just about cycling through breathtaking landscapes. It was about a collective of passionate individuals united by a single goal - to make a positive impact on the lives of children in need. Witnessing the unwavering dedication of our fellow cyclists, the heartwarming support from the community, and the smiles on the faces of the children we'll be helping – these are the moments that will stay with me forever. As the project leader for Bike to Care Sumba 2024, I'm incredibly proud of what we accomplished together. It wasn't always easy, but seeing everything come together – from meticulous planning to the smooth execution of the event – was immensely rewarding. From securing sponsorships and partnerships to ensuring a safe and memorable experience for all participants, it was a true team effort. The dedication and collaborative spirit of everyone involved were instrumental in making this event a success. Bike to Care Sumba 2024 wasn't just an event; it was a movement. Living in Tokyo is not all about work! There are plenty of things going on all the time, and for me personally being able to give back or volunteer while being out and about was very satisfying. One event that stood out as a fun challenge combining physical endurance, teamwork, and a great cause is the Tokyo Yamathon . The Yamathon is a 'walkathon' charity event where teams of three or four walk the entire length of Tokyo’s iconic Yamanote 🚃 Line—a 40 km loop that circles some of the city’s most famous neighborhoods. Lucky for me you can also do a half-Yamathon, but 20 km is still quite an endeavor for someone who didn't train at all! The unique thing about this experience is that you get to explore Tokyo’s diverse neighborhoods, you'll walk on roads and in alleys you'd otherwise never visit. And, proceeds from the event go toward important charities, making it an incredible way to give back while challenging yourself! I did this with a team from work (actually, all members of our Star Wars Club 😂), and another wonderful result of doing this together was increased teamspirit after the event. Keeping each other motivated as feet started hurting was the biggest challenge 😅 I can proudly report that our team finished in second place in the 2016 half-Yamathon 🏆 Have you participated in the Yamathon or a similar event? Recent Australian Sports Foundation research confirms our Aussie athletes need more help than they are currently getting. The research found female athletes were more likely to consider leaving their sport, with 56% of female athletes actually considering walking away compared to 47% of male elite athletes. One participant who is an elite female hockey player said, “Funding is my constant concern. Being a female, and in an Olympic sport which does not have high commercial support, it can be very soul destroying knowing myself and my teammates are the best in our country for our gender in a well-known Olympic sport, and yet we earn a pittance." 🤾♀️ The latest edition of the Fundraising in Sport for Development: State of the Sector Report went live one week ago today. 🌍 For the fourth year in a row, we surveyed organisations using sport as a tool for positive social outcomes across the globe. 🌱 The findings revealed that, despite the challenging socio-economic circumstances, organisations are generally feeling confident about their ability to increase their fundraising income. Came across this amazing campaign from a few years back 💡Brands invest way more in men's football than in women's, The excuse? No one's watching women's football 💡So, a Brazilian soda brand Guarana Antarctica (Ambev) stepped in to raise money for women's football with a campaign named #shecan 💡The brand gave up its logo space on the cans (over 35 million cans run around the country every month, reach more than any TV show or YouTube channel) and turned it into an ad space for brands 💡In 1 week, more than 100 brands subscribed and 10 of them paid $100,000 for the spot, helping collect about $2.5mn 💡All the money collected was invested in supporting the women's football ecosystem in Brazil 💡Number of big brands such as Burger King, PUMA Group, ESPN, LAYS, Avon, etc. took this unique ad opportunity and supported the cause in some way 💡Some brands took it up a notch- Puma offered its factories for production of women's football kits, Banco Bmg sponsored women's teams, and ESPN broadcasted the women's finals for the first time ever! As we close the season for Singapore Art Week, we hosted the Malaysian Photography exhibition at DECK Photography Art Centre Ltd. for one final show over the weekend. It was a delightful experience to witness the talent of young and emerging artists, whose works were curated by @gwenlee the founder of this non-profit charity (IPC status). The objective of this organization is to uplift Asian photographers and utilize photography as a means for rehabilitative recovery and mental wellness for those in need. As a newly minted board member on this charity, I volunteer on the fundraising committee of the board. It’s my pleasure to put together a personal group consisting of small business owners, academia, investors from both the private and public markets, as well as professionals in law and accounting. We explored the gallery with curious lens and a willingness to share. The year 2024 has begun on a challenging note, characterized by global trade tensions, geopolitical events, and China's economic slowdown. The impact of these factors is keenly felt on the streets, where the unemployment rate has risen and spending has been tightened. We were fortunate enough to hear firsthand experiences and insights from the participants, who shared their expertise and shed light on the headwinds that business owners can expect to face. We also gained valuable insights into potential go-to-market strategies in Southeast Asia, which can help sustain their businesses. I aspire to bring more networking initiatives to my #towkaycollective, with the mission to support and uplift small business owners. By providing a platform for all industries to connect and fostering the growth of the next generation of young talents, we aim to make a positive impact through our collective efforts. For those that even vaguely know me, you will know I have three earthly passions being family, the planet and football so this week is an important one with two contrasting "days" this week. Monday was #EarthDay and today is #FootballShirtFriday which is raising funds for Bowel Cancer which my Dad sadly succumbed to almost a decade ago. Tomorrow is a big day for my favourite club Derby County but the photo is of Spanish team Athletic Bilbao. Why do I own such a shirt? Well, I recently attended #WindEurope conference in Bilbao and decided to do some research on the football club. What struck me was the fact that the Club (since a 1911 about English players in in their winning cup team) has an all-Basque selection policy. It's resources therefore come from the locality - it aims to be a reflection of it's society. For the last few I have made a pledge (no takeaway cups, no plastic straws, no single use plastic bottles) to try and make progress each year towards helping the planet. This year it's not about one single thing but about an approach - I will look again at where the Cleak household buys from - the obvious area is food and drink where there should be some easy(ish) wins but the aim is to be holistic and have a mindset of "local, local, local" - let's hope I have as much success as Athletic who recently won the Copa Del Rey with Inaki and Nico Williams (brothers born to Ghanaian parents) starring and being pioneers for the Club.
