Terrific Tuesday! Children are a gift to parents, grandparents, relatives and even the society at large. In my morning runs, l would see kids very early in the morning at the side walks standing waiting for school buses and some even stranded to cross the busy and major highways and any adult myself included would give a helping hand and help them cross the road. What is ubuntu? "I am because we are" and some say "humanity towards others". Apprenticeship is an art used by our forefathers to learn a skill by watching a skilled person/craftsman perform their craft. Our children also do grow by form of apprenticeship where they see what we do, how we behave and more or less likely to grow up and become the society 2.0. Child protection means safeguarding children from harm. Harm includes violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect. The goal of child protection is to promote, protect and fulfil children’s rights to protection from abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence as expressed in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)) and other human rights, humanitarian and refugee treaties and conventions, as well as national laws. Children experience insidious forms of violence, exploitation and abuse. It happens in every country, and in the places children should be most protected – their homes, schools and communities. Violence against children can be physical, emotional or sexual. And in many cases, children suffer at the hands of the people they trust. Children in humanitarian settings are especially vulnerable. During armed conflict, natural disasters and other emergencies, children may be forced to flee their homes, some torn from their families and exposed to exploitation and abuse along the way. They risk injury and death. They may be recruited by armed groups. Especially for girls and women, the threat of gender-based violence soars. Harmful cultural practices pose another grave risk in various parts of the world. Hundreds of millions of girls have been subjected to child marriage and female genital mutilation – even though both are internationally recognized human rights violations. No matter the circumstance, every child has the right to be protected from violence. Child protection systems connect children to vital social services and fair justice systems – starting at birth. They provide care to the most vulnerable, including children uprooted by conflict or disaster; victims of child labour or trafficking; and those who live with disabilities or in alternative care. Protecting children means protecting their physical and psychosocial needs to safeguard their futures. #childprotection #futuregenerations #leavingnoonebehind

In the midst of what has been a pretty horrible period, with the young people we work with and our staff team desperately worried about the implementation of the Rwanda policy, I am so proud to hear the amazing Young Roots and Helen Bamber Foundation teams talk about how our partnership has been so successful in supporting young people through the age disputes process so that they are treated as children and get the protection and support to which they are entitled. Our holistic way of working with young people - where they might come to our hubs to play sport or learn English or cook, whilst there can speak to our caseworker to support with homelessness or find a GP, can access the amazing therapy from Helen Bamber psychologists or advice from our legal partners - is key. As our brilliant Senior Caseworker said, down time with young people, over an extended period, whilst having lunch with young people between appointments or playing pool with them at our youth club, supports young people to feel comfortable being their authentic selves and to show their true age. And while some of the practices used by the Home Office to determine a young person’s age do not give an accurate picture “a person’s mates at youth club are a pretty good indication”. Basically, creating connection, community and relationships with young people means they are able to relax, a bit, and be themselves and allows us to get to know them properly. It’s not rocket science, as our new report They Made Me Feel Like Myself, shows. We want to see fewer age assessments. They seem to be routine at the moment. And this really matters. Getting a young person’s age wrong causes real harm to children - it could result in a child being forced to share a room with an adult stranger in asylum accommodation, instead of being cared for in foster care. If age assessments must happen, they should adopt some of the approaches and evidence that come from our holistic, ongoing and relationships-based approaches to working with young people - our evidence shows it works. https://lnkd.in/eg5VZw_B

Did you know that Canada's youth justice system is separate from the adult system?⁠ ⚖️⁠ ⁠ Under the 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐭 (𝐘𝐂𝐉𝐀), youth aged 12 to 17 are treated differently in criminal cases than adults, with different procedures recognizing their unique needs and an emphasis on rehabilitation.⁠ ⁠ ⁠ There are three key principles of the act: ⁠ ⁠ - Holding youth accountable⁠ - Promoting rehabilitation and reintegration⁠ - Preventing crime by addressing the root cause of criminal behaviour⁠ ⁠ Under the YCJA, youth justice interventions reinforce respect for societal values, encourage the repair of harm done, respect ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and gender differences, and respond to the unique needs of Indigenous youth and other young people with special requirements.⁠ ⁠ The YCJA encourages referrals to community-based organizations like Fernie Youth, where youth have the opportunity to transform their lives and grow into purposeful adults who can positively impact their communities.⁠ ⁠ For more information on how we work with justice-involved youth, head to the Fernie Youth site – link below. 🏀 ➡️ https://fernieyouth.ca ⁠ #fernieyouth #caringbeyondreason #scarborough #nonprofitorganization #youthadvocacy #reintegration #youthjusticesystem

These five elements would improve the position of deprivation of liberty orders in England. 1: Enhanced Funding and Resources: Increased financial support for public services and care and support facilities to provide better, less restrictive care and support options. 2: Policy Reforms: Legislative changes to ensure that Dol orders are truly used as a last resort and that alternative care models are prioritised. 3: Better Training and Support for Care Workers: Providing care workers with the training and resources needed to offer high-quality, person-centered care. 4: Community-Based Support Systems: Developing robust community support networks to help individuals live independently and reduce the need for institutional care. 5: Increased Transparency and Involvement: Ensuring that individuals and their families are fully involved in the care and support planning process and that they are informed of their rights and options.

A new report from UCLA Law Review examines the intersections between ableism, abolition, and the immigration system. "Standing on Our Own Two Feet: Disability Justice as a Frame for Reimagining Our Ableist Immigration System" is the first article to argue that dismantling ableism is a core element of the movement for immigrant justice, and disability justice principles can help identify the radical changes needed for transformation. Linking on the word "here" is not compliant with the WCAG standard for digital access. It makes it difficult for people using screen readers. Making it accessible means linking on a phrase that describes where the link leads. The fact that this error has been made in this context speaks volumes about their (lack of) commitment to disability access and inclusion. We've only got 13 days to comment. ATTN – Chief, Council, Band Managers and Directors Aboriginal Community Safety Planning Initiative The Aboriginal Community Safety Planning Initiative (ACSPI) works to prevent incidents of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), provides a means to enhance accessibility to Restorative Justice programming and responds to the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The ACSPI supports Indigenous communities in the development of Community Safety Plans (CSPs) which are specific to their unique circumstances. These plans identify community strengths, assets and safety and wellness goals in order for all community members to see themselves involved on a path leading toward a healthier, safer home and community life. The ACSDCP includes two initiatives: • Aboriginal Community Safety Planning Initiative (ACSPI)- Objective: To enhance or improve Indigenous communities' ability to support the development and/or implementation of community safety plans • The Indigenous Community Corrections Initiative (ICCI)- Objective: To support the development of alternatives to incarceration projects; or To provide reintegration support.
