Over these last few months, I've been on a mission to understand what diversity, equity, and inclusion are, exactly. It is critical for DEI professionals and advocates of this work to have effective definitions of the allyship we hope to embody in our endeavors. If diversity is the presence of difference. and inclusion ensures those differences are celebrated, then equity ensures that difference is accounted for. Rather than "giving everyone the same thing," equity identifies the historical and systemic barriers that create opportunity gaps. Equity and equality are not the same. While equality distributes regardless of need, equity centers on the needs of those who are most vulnerable and often forgotten.
