My First 2 Months as a Projects Engineer In my journey as a project engineer over the past two months, the learning curve has been steep, and the experiences invaluable. Here are some key takeaways that have shaped my understanding of the role: 1. People Management Skills One of the foremost lessons has been the importance of people management. I've discovered that leading a team involves more than just giving orders—it requires a delicate balance of respect, understanding individual needs, and addressing concerns. By taking care of my team, I've witnessed a reciprocal commitment to the success of our project. 2. Project Coordination and Monitoring Scheduling, monitoring, and coordinating various facets of a project have become second nature. Efficient project management involves meticulous planning, regular checks, and adaptability to keep everything on track. 3. Effective Communication with Clients Daily interactions with clients have taught me the art of effective communication. Understanding and interpreting their requirements and needs is crucial for project success. Clear and open lines of communication contribute significantly to client satisfaction. 4. Comprehensive Quality Control Maintaining quality control extends beyond technical aspects. It encompasses team dynamics, personnel performance, planning, scheduling, and budget adherence. A holistic approach to quality ensures that every facet of the project meets the desired standards. 5. Timely Project Reporting Submitting regular reports on project status is vital for transparency and accountability. It serves as a mechanism to keep stakeholders informed and to address any emerging issues promptly. 6. Compliance Monitoring Ensuring compliance in all aspects of the project is a non-negotiable responsibility. Vigilance in adhering to regulations and guidelines contributes to the project's integrity and success. 7. Collaborative Team Communication Effective communication within the project team is essential. Regular interactions with the project manager and other team members provide opportunities to offer assistance, share technical support, and foster a collaborative atmosphere. 8. Proactive Review of Engineering Deliverables A proactive approach to reviewing engineering deliverables is critical. Initiating corrective actions throughout the project lifecycle helps to address issues promptly, ensuring that the project stays on course. In just two months, I've come to appreciate the multifaceted nature of being a project engineer. The blend of interpersonal skills, technical acumen, and proactive management is the foundation for successful project outcomes. Looking ahead, I'm excited to build on these insights and continue growing in this dynamic role.💯🏌♂️ #mechanicalengineering #projectengineer #mining #construction #totalenergies

Young Engineer : I have 3 years of experience and currently working as a construction scheduler. I want to be a Project Manager in the future. My goal is to manage large projects of construction domain. I am thinking of pursuing MBA in Construction Management. I think It will help me getting project management roles at higher level. What is your opinion and advise? Me : Are the Project Managers in your current organisation have Masters in Construction Management? Young Engineer : In my company, 90% project managers are not even a regular MBA. They are due to experience and promotions. I also got a promotion from engineer 1 to engineer 2 recently. Me : Usually the industries do not hire project managers without sufficient experience, and often in the same domain. After you complete MBA and with your 3 years’ experience, you might be hired in Project Coordination roles. Young Engineer : Yes I know I cannot get directly project manager’s role even after MBA but at least I can try for Assistant PM role. Me : I saw in your CV that you are currently managing 15 engineers. Is it correct? Young Engineer : Yes. I even gave training to a batch of nearly 30 fresh engineers recently for the current project. Me : If you are actually doing what is mentioned in your Resume then you are already performing the roles of Assistant Project Manager. Apply yourself fully and continue doing the hard work for few years. They will make you Project Manager for sure. Managing and coaching people is a great trait for a PM, seems like you have it. Just give some time and you will reach there. So if the salary and other things are ok, then stick to the current job. Young Engineer : That sounds great and enthusiastic. I got your point. I will put more efforts. Thank you Do Share your thoughts...... #projectmanagement #projectcontrols

A Project Engineer recently shared an insight with me about the first few years of his career. He told me… “With experience over time, you know right from wrong on site. And what to do about it”. At the start of your career it can be difficult to make the call about the right pathway in a construction project. But as you learn and develop the skills you need, you find that immersing yourself in the project, asking questions and seeking feedback are all ways of getting to where you want to be. And faster. If your attitude is right, time is the thing that makes the difference. Time turns Project Coordinators, Contract Administrators and Graduates who show promise.. into trusted professionals.

✨ The importance of not being intimidated by a job description ✨ When you first glance at a job description, the extensive list of required skills, experience and knowledge and even the title itself can feel overwhelming. This might even discourage you from considering the role further. For example, below are some of the keywords commonly found in commissioning job descriptions. For those with significant experience in commissioning, these terms will be familiar. However, if you're just starting out or considering transitioning into commissioning, you might worry that you lack the necessary experience. But this doesn't just apply to commissioning roles—whether it's administration, construction, project management, engineering, or any other field, the same principle holds true. When searching for a new role, it's essential to focus on the skills you already possess and consider whether you're willing to learn those you don't. We understand that this isn't always easy, and that's where we come in to help!

One profound lesson I have come to learn is that being a moldable professional is very key to building one’s career. It allows you to take up any challenge that requires you to step up when circumstances change. You become immovable and yet able to acclimate yourself to new responsibilities and carry them out diligently. Not only have I had a privilege to serve as a Senior Project Engineer on a very key project, but accepting a new responsibility as Site Manager has been an important step in discovering some of my abilities and developing new ones in order to carry out this challenging role diligently. #projectmanagement #environmentalmanagement #sitemanagement #siteengineer

Project management roles and responsibilities in small companies versus large companies When it comes to project management in larger companies, it's essential to understand that the role can vary significantly depending on the organisation's size. For instance, in a company like CPB or McConnel Dowell or Ausenco etc the project manager's role typically encompasses the management of the engineering manager, procurement manager, contracts, project controls, and document control managers. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that they meet the schedule, budget and report project status accurately. In larger projects, which can range from $500 million to Billion dollar projects in project value, there might be one major project manager & one construction manager overseeing the project or multiple Additionally, there will be project engineers involved; these roles are essentially the roles leading into project management so they are training to become a project managers eventually. So it matters how you are performing and perceived by others in all aspects of the project which determines your career progression. In contrast, smaller companies with five to ten employees managing projects worth one to two million dollars operate differently. While the work remains interesting, the scope is more focused, and there's less need for all aspects of the larger corporations, less red tape, but good work all the same. Smaller projects often provide more hands-on experience, or intimate experience with opportunities to work on various aspects of projects comparative to really large budgeted projects. So when transitioning from a small to a large company, it's crucial to understand that job titles may not directly translate. A project manager role in a small company might entail different responsibilities compared to a similar role in a larger organization. Therefore, applicants must contextualize their experience appropriately to avoid misunderstandings during the application process.
