Happy Friday! This week's BASE Line is now LIVE, featuring a roundup of the week's news, insights and innovation from across the category, with this week's special Big Question coming from Megan Page - Head of PR, Marketing and Promotions at ERA. Read now: https://lnkd.in/e_fysvVf We asked Megan - BASE recently released a new podcast series called 'The BASE Roundtables', what's your favourite entertainment podcast and why? She said "My favourite podcast is Office Ladies with Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsley! I loved both the US & UK versions of the show and have rewatched them both so many times - yet still can't get enough. The podcast goes through each episode and tells stories from behind the scenes, interviews the writers and cast members and explains how the show came together from make up, set design, props, music sync, casting and directing through to the marketing decisions and press strategy. It's such a great listen, not just because I love the show and enjoy the extra intel, but also to learn how a major sitcom comes together from start to finish." Elsewhere, we shared the news that new research from the United States suggests the launch of new tiers partially funded by ads has led to a third of subscribers upgrading their services. A new report incorporating research from 5,000 US subscribers on their habits, behaviours and attitudes towards subscriptions has shown that 36% of respondents have chosen to change to premium tiers to avoid interrupting their viewing. Turning your business into a lead getting machine by leveraging the power of social media ⏰ Digital Marketing | Paid Advertising | Marketing Strategy | Social Media
Steven Barlett ruined an entire theatre’s night on Friday… On Friday night I went to Glasgow to listen to Steven Barlett’s ‘The Business and Life Speaking Tour” And during the event, he mentioned how someone backstage had asked him about how to grow on social media… And at this moment you almost felt the entire room listen more intently. The social media and podcast genius was about reveal the exact strategy you should use to blow up online. And yet whilst Steven Bartlett currently has Apple Music UK’s most popular podcast and 3.4 million followers on Instagram... He confessed that his response to this was, ‘I don’t know’… I’m sorry…you don’t know? I (like others probably were) was surprised by his answer… He went on to say that in today’s world, it is almost impossible to be an expert on social media because the landscape changes almost every single day. What works today, might not work tomorrow. And that’s when gave you the actual secret. You have to fail more (and faster) than everyone else. Because the more you fail, the more feedback you have. The more you fail, the more data you have to work with. The goal of social media isn’t to master it. It’s to fail at it so much that you have more information about what doesn’t work than 99% of the people who use it. So start posting, start failing, and start taking notes, NOW. If you’ve been to any of the events on the tour, comment below the biggest lessons you took from it.

Head of Integrated Media at Kenvue | Brand and Creative Strategy | Digital Transformation and Operations | Newsletter Author
Podcasting, once primarily a haven for niche culture and true crime, has come a long way. Today, there are nearly 450k active shows and big names are raking in millions from the likes of Spotify and Amazon. This is because the top 25 podcasts reach roughly half of all listeners in the US. With nearly 100 million Americans age 12 and older listening to a podcast each week – that’s a lot of reach. But with the advertising revenue in the space representing about $2B/year which is under 1% of total domestic ad spend, we’re seeing podcasts move into new areas to pick up the slack like live events, merchandise, and videos of their shows which can then be posted to YouTube and monetized. To contextualize how big video has gotten, Spotify introduced the capability in 2020 and today, a quarter million podcasters upload video to its service. Matt’s Hot Take™ - Podcasting has been an interesting medium for brands given the high level of consumer engagement, especially on the biggest pods, but the advertising capabilities have historically been playing catch up. While there are much better tools today for brands to tap into, the perhaps more interesting opportunities lie with the broader universe these shows are creating for their fans. From different content formats, to live events, podcasts have grown into complex entities that allow for brands to do more than simply pay for host reads. Podcasts have gotten too big to ignore - but remember to get creative! #mattshottake #media #podcasts Check out this week's newsletter where we also cover Big Tech's antitrust troubles: https://bit.ly/3LZvJio Subscribe inside the newsletter link for more!

Friday Reminder: Stop letting social media consume your life Make a plan to be more selective You can choose to consume mindfully or mindlessly. Your doom-scrolling is taking away precious time from your life. Time you could spent with loved ones, out in nature, doing crafts, reading, vibing to music, etc. As every "feel-good" behavior social media gives our brain a dopamine hit. You become addicted! ✅ Tamper down little by little. ✅ Curate your content and what you consume. ✅ Find alternatives. Instead of scrolling put on a podcast and take a walk. It doesn't need to be all at once. 10 minutes less each day = 1:10 hr per week! A 5 min curating session of creators to follow Personally, I have found that being selective who to follow and putting my phone far is what works. How could you be more mindful when using social media?

Founder of PAVE Studios. Former VP, Head of Talk Creator Content & Partnerships at Spotify. Founded Parcast Studios.
The Wall Street Journal recently published a story this past weekend about the evolving podcast landscape and how podcasts are creating new opportunities for creators to connect with audiences in innovative ways and monetize their content like never before. Thank you to Anne Steele for including me in her story alongside other industry leaders like Jen Sargent (Wondery’s Chief Executive). I always enjoy talking about this exciting new shift so I wanted to share some additional insights below... Today’s business landscape is undoubtedly more complex, but this complexity paves the way for unprecedented opportunities. We're now in an era where building a true 360-degree business is essential, and diversification is crucial for future success. The business model used to be simple: create a new podcast, make a deal, and sell ads. While the industry still relies on ads, there are now other proven revenue streams through subscriptions, live events, and merchandise that creators and businesses must focus on. Just like in traditional media, where the biggest stars will always get paid (think Tom Cruise), top-tier digital creators will continue to get lucrative deals with guarantees attached. Equally important, however, is the mid-tier and emerging creators who have created amazingly engaged communities and fandom. For instance, having one thousand fans who are willing to pay is far more valuable than having one million who are not. This is why PAVE Studios was created. We’re at the forefront of this transformative shift, reimagining business models for a future where formats continue to blend together and distribution strategies change. It’s crucial that there is an independent studio operating at the intersection of longform audio, video, and books, acting on behalf of and as a creative thought partner to creators of all types. In three short months, PAVE is already working with a handful of creators including Khloé Kardashian, Nicole Lapin, Dr. Mark Hyman, and more. And we are just getting started! We can't wait to unveil more of the amazing creators, partnerships and announcements in the coming months.
