This senseless movie 1000 CRORE Club movie left a social impact... The movie is PATHAAN ! The Delhi High Court asked the producers to give audio descriptions and captions to make it accessible to blind and deaf people. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Accessibility for PwD in India is mostly unavailable or very expensive. We - ❌ don’t have sign language interpreters for visual media ❌ have to import hearing aids, braille devices and wheelchairs at high prices ❌ don’t have basic facilities in public for the disabled Even though this is just the beginning of change-making. So what’s the solution? Our government can - ➡️  allocate budget to setup assistive technology manufacturers in India ➡️ can encourage investments and incentives to make these technologies affordable ➡️ address challenges to better implement existing laws regarding upgrading public facilities ➡️ support organisations that are trying to bring change for good. Have you ever had an interaction with an individual who is deaf? We’ll here’s my experience and how it changed a lot of things for me. ⭐️ As someone who is hearing but has always wanted to learn sign language, It was a true blessing to be able to have individuals from ConnectHear come in as part of my volunteering experience for Katalyst Labs’s +92Disrupt last year. They helped us understand the right terminology to use, basic sign language and simple gestures we could do to communicate with anyone coming in who was deaf and help them feel more welcomed. Over the course of those two days, I was able to communicate effectively with over 30+ individuals, one of whom I actually linked up with on LinkedIn later on to help me with a project. As someone who values having empathy and inclusivity, it felt amazing to be able to actually be a part of the change that’s happening in Pakistan. I hope to see more conferences alike having bridged such barriers ultimately making all spaces accessible and welcoming for everyone present. Also special appreciation for the ConnectHear team - they are doing amazing work for the deaf community in Pakistan. You guys rock 🫶 Those two days also helped me realise how much of a community we ignore and often forget when we are creating experiences especially in design. As a designer, I truly hope I am able to take into consideration the struggles of all, so I can be making a change in society, rather than adding to the gap. #buildingbridges #personalgrowth

I would like to share a story about accessibility~ A few times a year, I attend anime conventions to help a friend sell their artwork. This past weekend, we were at our home convention, AnimeIowa. Early on Friday, before the Vendor's Hall doors opened, a staff member on a motorized scooter approached me to ask about my leg brace. She was curious if it helped support my ankle, as she was looking for a similar brace. Just over two years ago, I had a freak accident that severed a nerve in my left leg, leaving me permanently disabled. While I can walk unassisted most of the time, I get fatigued easily when standing for long periods and become more prone to falling. To support my foot when I expect to be walking a lot, I wear an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) brace. During our conversation, she asked if I had received my Accessibility badge. I was unfamiliar with this, so she reached into her basket and handed me a small sheet of paper and a button to add to my badge. I had no idea this was a thing. While I spent most of my time in the Vendor's Hall during the convention and didn't need to use the button, I love that such accommodations are offered. As someone newly disabled, I have been learning how challenging many places can be for those with mobility problems. To be honest, accepting and adapting to my condition has been difficult. However, discovering accommodations like this button warms my heart and reinforces that accessibility for everyone truly matters. #disabilities #ADA #accessibilityforall #accessibilty #mobilitiy

How can we make places better for disabled people? Road crossings Road crossing are supposed to enable people to cross roads safely But dependent on their features, or, in many instances, lack of them, they can make disabled people feel anything but safe So, how could we make road crossings better? I’ll go first… Audio We still have major crossing points without audio notification This means many people, including people with visual impairments and those who need absolute certainty it’s safe to cross, are often unsure when it’s safe to do so Audio at crossings needs to be the standard Rotating tactile cones Many crossings now have rotating, tactile cones that spin when it’s safe to cross But many of them are missing, putting people dependent on tactile notification, such as visually impaired and DeafBlind people, at risk Tactile cones at crossings need to be regularly reviewed and maintained by local authorities Crossing time Current guidance suggests that crossings should assume a walking speed of 1.2 meters per second Yet, the average walking speed for people in the UK is 0.85 meters per second – with this much slower for many disabled people out there who may be more cautious when crossing a road, have fatigue or mobility related conditions Crossings need to reflect true walking speed _______ As ever, these are just my thoughts.
