Hey everyone, Pride Month is a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, but what about the rich history of LGBTQ+ individuals who may have been hidden from the mainstream narrative? Imagine history textbooks featuring portraits of prominent LGBTQ+ figures alongside historical icons. What if classic paintings depicted same-sex couples or gender-nonconforming individuals? This month, let's get creative and challenge traditional historical representations! Here's the challenge: Take a well-known historical artwork (painting, photograph, etc.) and reimagine it to include LGBTQ+ representation. You can: ▪ Use digital editing tools ▪ Create a new piece inspired by the original ▪ Write a short story about a character reinterpreted through an LGBTQ+ lens The goal? ▪ Spark conversation about the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility in history. ▪ Celebrate the diversity of human experiences throughout time. ▪ Show how history can be more inclusive and representative. Share your creations on LinkedIn with the hashtag #HistoryRemix! and don't forget to tag me. I'll be featuring some of the most creative entries next week! Bonus points for: ▪ Using humor or satire to challenge traditional narratives. ▪ Highlighting the contributions of specific LGBTQ+ historical figures. ▪ Encouraging further research into LGBTQ+ history. Let's use our creativity to celebrate Pride Month and rewrite history with a more inclusive lens!

In Wisconsin LGBTQ+ history extends long before the iconic Stonewall Uprising and milestone historical moments continue to be made daily. Explore some of the courageous pioneers, influential moments, and hard-won victories for the LGBTQ+ community at the local, state, and national level. Archives can and should be spaces that bridge memory and social justice, encourage engagement, and allow hidden histories to be shared and celebrated. “Our Voices: LGBTQ+ Stories of Northeastern Wisconsin” is an ongoing community archiving collection by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Archives and Area Research Center. The oral history interviews in this collection capture powerful and emotional stories which were often not shared. Individuals tell their personal experiences about their childhood and school days; LGBTQ+ journey; relationships; advocacy efforts; parenting and work; challenges and joys as well as their wishes for the future. The interviews strive to be inclusive regardless of age; race; religion; education; or gender and sexual orientation. Drawing upon these oral history interviews, the exhibition “Telling Our Stories: LGBTQ+ Voices of Northeastern Wisconsin” seeks to showcase the history and experiences of Northeast Wisconsin’s LGBTQ+ community through archival research and community engagement and was created to inspire further understanding. “Telling Our Stories: LGBTQ+ Voices of Northeastern Wisconsin” will be on display from February 10 through November 3, 2024. #bridging #connecting #generations #communities #voices #archives

🌈 Pride Month may have ended, and the time has come to remove that rainbow logo, but the commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion must continue year-round. 🏳️⚧️ It's essential for organisations to keep the momentum going, fostering environments where everyone can be their authentic selves every day. Imagine your rights and existence constantly being discussed, debated and attacked. How would you perform at work? Here are three actionable tips to ensure continuous support and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community: Implement Inclusive Policies: Develop and enforce policies that explicitly protect LGBTQ+ employees from discrimination. Ensure your organisation's benefits and resources are inclusive of all identities, such as healthcare coverage for transgender employees and family leave for all types of families. Ongoing Education and Training: Offer regular training sessions on LGBTQ+ issues and inclusivity to educate employees at all levels. Encourage open dialogue, curiosity and provide resources that promote understanding and active allyship. Support and Celebrate All Year: Recognise and celebrate LGBTQ+ milestones and events beyond Pride Month. Participate in local LGBTQ+ initiatives, sponsor events, and highlight LGBTQ+ voices and stories within your organisation continuously. Together, we can create a workplace culture that celebrates diversity and promotes equality every day. Let’s keep the momentum going! 🌟 What initiatives has your organisation implemented to support LGBTQ+ rights year-round? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments! 👇 #LGBTQInclusion #BeyondPride #DiversityandInclusion #Allyship #EqualityForAll [image is of a transgender man stood in front of a shop with stickers on the wall]

I’m proud to release a report brief by Loyola Marymount University's LGBTQ+ Politics Research Initiative, the LGBTQ+ Victory Institute and the Black Leaders Caucus on the experiences of Black LGBTQ+ candidates running for office in the United States. Despite recent progress, Black LGBTQ+ people remain severely underrepresented in elected office, with devastating consequences. This report is based on a survey of about 50 Black LGBTQ+ candidates who ran for office between 2018-2022. As of February 2024, 142 Black out LGBTQ+ people are serving in office. They hold just 0.03% of elected positions in the United States. To achieve equitable elected representation, 2,453 more Black LGBTQ+ candidates would need to be elected. Black LGBTQ+ candidates face distinct challenges on the campaign trail, including: a unique mix of racism, homophobia and transphobia; a lack of role models; financial challenges; a lack of campaign support from political parties and endorsing organizations; anti-LGBTQ+ attacks; and unfair media coverage. Black LGBTQ+ candidates in our survey highlighted that LGBTQ+ racial minorities also face unique challenges that are often not addressed by the larger LGBTQ+ community or Black community. They mentioned housing, healthcare, and employment as priority issues, inasmuch as these issues disproportionately affect Black and Brown LGBTQ+ people. They also indicated steps to increase Black LGBTQ+ representation and to confront racism, homophobia, and transphobia in electoral politics. These steps include: increase financial support for Black LGBTQ+ candidates; provide non-material resources to Black LGBTQ+ candidates, such as campaign training and media connections; offer leadership development programs for young Black LGBTQ+ leaders; proactively contrast racism, homophobia, and transphobia in political organizations; increase diversity in political staff and leadership; create networking opportunities for Black LGBTQ+ candidates; welcome and encourage Black LGBTQ+ candidates to be authentic in political spaces. This report brief reveals major hurdles for Black LGBTQ+ candidates, which may discourage some potential leaders from pursuing elected office. Increasing Black LGBTQ+ representation is crucial to ensure that the unique perspectives of Black LGBTQ+ people are heard and considered, which can lead to more inclusive legislation and stronger democracy. #BlackHistoryMonth #LGBTQrights #LGBTQrepresentation https://lnkd.in/dfW5AZHD
