There are numerous methods to gauge inflation. Two widely used ones are CPI and PCE, which is the preferred inflation measure of the Fed. Unfortunately, there’s a significant disparity between the two. Traditionally, core CPI (excluding food and energy) has been 40 basis points higher than core PCE. Presently, core CPI stands at 3.9%, while core PCE is at 2.8%, creating a gap of 110 basis points. This considerable difference is likely prompting the Fed to postpone rate cuts.
