Our paper is out! Pearl millet is an important staple crop in Africa and India, but yield is threatened by the parasitic weed Striga. We sequenced the genomes of a resistant and a susceptible pearl millet and found a crucial gene that makes a big difference. Plant breeders can now aim for the resistant allele, and soon introduce more resistant cultivars to both commercial farming and smallholder farmers. https://lnkd.in/eRGBt39X

In order to cultivate drought resistant varieties of wheat, it is important that we understand the involved mechanisms at all stages of crop development. This paper fills a gap in this understanding by analyzing the drought stress mechanisms in wheat seedlings. They use genome-wide scanning to identify and validate SNPs associated with drought-tolerance, strengthening our ability to cultivate wheat crops with improved drought resistance. https://lnkd.in/eBTPfDbk #plantgenome #genomics #genetics #biotech #biotechnology #plantscience #plantresearch #agriculture #agtech

Did you know? An experiment performed with the #PlantArray phenotyping system does not need to complete an entire growth cycle. With the PlantArray, you can complete an experiment in just three weeks and reach conclusions within a few days of starting. How is that possible? The physiological response of plants to various stresses (such as dryness, salinity, and nutrient deficiencies) occurs shortly after the change and well before any visual signs appear. Don't be left behind! With PlantArray, you can perform more experiments, obtain more accurate and reliable results, and accelerate your discoveries! #phenotyping #plant #Biostimulnats #sustainability #science #drought #flood #salinity #nutrients #phenotypic #research #genotype #genetics

Dynamics of nitrogen fixation in non-nodulating crops 🇳🌱 🦠 Microbial diazotrophs (atmospheric nitrogen-fixing bacteria) were proved to have a substantial role in enhancing nitrogen availability in non-nodulating plant species. 🌳 N-fixing endophyte Burkholderia sp. was shown to form symbiotic relations with the poplar roots. 🔬 Nitrogenase nifH expression was demonstrated to be localized to the root elongation zone where the bacterial strain forms a physical interaction with the root cells. 🌾 Burkholderia strains are known to establish symbiotic relations with non-nodulating plant species improving the nitrogen metabolism and yield-related traits in a range of crop species. 🌽💧 I am always fascinated by plant response to drought, especially I managed maize drought screening at Corteva Agriscience, and continued in my PhD at University of Münster on the molecular level. 🌽💧 This study investigates the adaptive responses of maize roots to water deficit (WD) conditions, focusing on the developmental and hydraulic properties of primary roots (PR) and seminal roots (SR) of a maize hybrid line (B73H). 🌽💧 It examines the differential sensitivities of PR and SR to varying degrees of WD induced by polyethylene glycol, revealing distinct growth patterns and hydraulic responses. 🌽💧 Under mild WD, PR maintain axial growth while SR inhibit axial growth and prioritize lateral root (LR) development, suggesting integrated water uptake strategies. 🌽💧 More severe WD leads to marked inhibitions in growth and hydraulics for both PR and SR, with LR growth particularly impacted in PR and axial root growth in SR. 🌽💧 The study explores the molecular mechanisms underlying these responses, focusing on aquaporins (AQPs) and gene expression regulation. 🌽💧Results show differential AQP activity in PR and SR under WD, with reductions in AQP mRNA abundance contributing to WD-induced hydraulic inhibition. 🌽💧 This responsiveness underscores the flexibility of root hydraulics in adjusting water uptake capacity over time and across heterogeneous soil environments. 🌽💧 In conclusion, the study emphasizes the importance of root type-specific responses to WD in shaping overall water uptake strategies in maize seedlings. 🌽💧 It proposes that differences in anatomical and molecular responses between root types support their distinct functionalization and contribute to integrative acclimation responses of whole root systems to WD. Like and share the knowledge :) Dr. Hamed Altaweel #maize #corn #drought #sustainableagriculture
