Just less than 3 weeks to go before the 37th Chemspec Europe - Int. Exhibition for Fine & Speciality Chemicals in Duesseldorf. I've been attending these shows since 1988 and I am particularly looking forward to this event. This year I am working with RX Global to deliver the Royal Society of Chemistry Symposium at F200 which takes place on both show days and for which the theme is "Resource Innovation and Technical Advances in the Specialty Chemicals Sector". Across 15 presentations, disruptive process technologies, coupled with alternative sources of chemicals and materials, will be explored; innovations to improve processes by replacing materials or traditional production processes, or both. Particular attention will be paid to extracting value from waste (especially materials that pollute the environment) and to recycling/ reusing/ repurposing activities. ISPE Facilities of the Future Conference 2024 Another great Conference put on by ISPE President #TomHartman and his team! Many topics on point, addressing the challenges our industry is experiencing today and will have to improve on for the future. The ASTM Clean by Design initiative presented by #DawnMarshall (Sanofi) and #KennethPiercePhD (Hyde consulting) was well attended. Based on the many questions that #WalterRatti (Rattiinox Srl) and I fielded during the two days, advanced systems design and cleaning are priority topics. It is also confirmation that the change agents in the industry understand the decades old “tried and true” systems and “copy-paste” process design will be difficult to defend and implement going forward. Especially if the industry’s stated sustainability goals have any chance of being reached. Internally we talk about this weekly. However it is especially gratifying when industry influencers begin to recite our ideas back to us! For sure the ancient cable cars San Francisco is known for can get you around the city. But they cannot expand outside their tracks. So too with bio process systems limited by technology and designs that are decades old! I’d like to hear your thoughts!

It’s a wrap for Team #VTT together with Jaakko Kuusisaari and, Miika Nikinmaa) at The International Fibre Moulding and Paper Forming Conference 2024! What an incredible event it was at the grand venue (Vasateatern). We had the pleasure of listening fantastic speakers, including our very own Miika Nikinmaa. The audience were highly engaged, and the networking opportunities were excellent. The entire value chain was represented, from material and chemical suppliers to technology providers, end-users, and brand owners. VTT is happy to support all the players in the value chain with our expertise and piloting capabilities, helping companies on their commercialization journeys. Few takeaways: 1. Growth across the value chain is enabled through collaboration. 2. The opportunities to displace plastic with molded pulp are endless. 3. There are many more opportunities to extend collaboration to accelerate the development and commercialization of molded fiber. 4. Sufficient sustainability improvements can be achieved by transitioning from plastic to molded fiber solutions. 5. Further development of barriers for oxygen, moisture, water, and oil is still needed.
