In order to achieve optimally resource-saving production and to minimize scrap, viscosity fluctuations must be detected and any required counteraction taken as early as possible. Viscosity fluctuations may be caused, for example, by differences in fiber content due to batch change, or by variations in granulate quality. The unexpected glitch that sparked Loesche's signature 2+2 technology. In the early 1990s, an unusual observation was reported from a plant in Japan: a Loesche mill appeared to run more smoothly during clinker grinding after a component in the spring assembly unexpectedly failed. This anomaly piqued the curiosity of Loesche's engineers and set off a chain of experiments that would change clinker processing for good. Clinker, with its fine, dusty nature, presented unique challenges for grinding mills. Even Loesche mills, known for their efficiency in processing various materials, had room for improvement when it came to clinker. The engineers discovered that the distribution of clinker dust within the mill was hindering performance. Standard mill designs sometimes struggled with efficient air expulsion due to the way the rollers interacted with the material. This sometimes resulted in the need for higher operating pressures to achieve the desired grinding quality. The breakthrough came with the development of Loesche's now-iconic 2+2 technology, patented in 1994. This innovative design featured two large master rollers working in tandem with two smaller support rollers. This configuration optimized pressure distribution, enhanced material control, and reduced energy consumption. The result was a mill that offered the same grinding capacity as traditional four-roller mills but with far greater efficiency. This story reminds us that breakthroughs often emerge from unexpected sources.
