The Lost Arts of Football Development: A Journey Through Modernization As football has evolved, so too has player development. Advances in playing surfaces, technology, and coaching have transformed the sport, but some traditional aspects have been lost. This reflection on the “lost arts” reveals how icons like George Best and Bobby Charlton honed their skills under challenging conditions. 1. Mastering Uneven Playing Surfaces In George Best’s and Bobby Charlton’s era, natural grass pitches were often uneven and weather-beaten. Best’s dribbling and ball control were refined on boggy, unpredictable surfaces, requiring exceptional balance. Charlton’s precision in shooting and passing was developed through adapting to the erratic ball bounce, perfecting his technique to hit ‘50-pence’ passes even on difficult pitches. 2. The Art of First-Time Execution Both Best and Charlton mastered first-time passes and shots under less-than-ideal conditions. Best’s flair and creativity were honed through executing precise actions on surfaces where the ball might bobble. Charlton’s long-range shooting, similarly, was refined through relentless practice on varied pitches, showing how resilience and technique are intertwined. Conclusion A blend of old-school philosophy with modern approaches might be the key to future player development. Balancing innovation with traditional methods could enrich the training process and preserve the unique skills that shaped legends like Best and Charlton.

⚽“youth football player development”💯 Development of youth football players There are many elements that need to be discussed, including skills, technical aspects, and the development of individual abilities. Mono Football Academy therefore raises important issues that coaches are talking about. When it comes to good methods for developing youth footballers 1️⃣ Create a Fun and Positive Environment : Create a fun and creative environment Make sure training sessions and competitions are fun for players. Promote positive interaction teamwork and sportsmanship Players will be able to develop fully when they have fun 2️⃣ Age-Appropriate Training: Age-appropriate training Organize training according to the player's age and skill level. Young children need easy training and sessions that take less time. Meanwhile, older players can organize more complex training sessions and longer training times 3⃣ Emphasize Basic Skills: Focus on basic skills Emphasis is placed on teaching and developing basic skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting and ball control. These skills are the basis of a player's development and should be trained regularly 4⃣ Develop Tactical Understanding: Develop understanding of tactics Teach players basic tactics such as standing, moving when there is no ball, and playing as a team, helping them understand the importance of teamwork and decision-making on the field 5⃣ Focus on Game Realism: Focus on virtual reality Includes game-like situations and practice exercises in practice. Simulate a competition situation Encourage players to make decisions under pressure. This helps players develop their ability to use skills and tactics in real game situations 6⃣ Provide Feedback and Encouragement: Express opinions and encourage Offer creative suggestions to players individually and as a team. Recognize their efforts and development. Promote positive thinking and help players learn from their mistakes 7⃣ Long-Term Player Development: Long-term player development Focus on long-term player development rather than short-term results. Give them the opportunity to advance through levels and challenges. As they develop their skills 8⃣ Small-sided games: small field games It supports small-field games such as 4v4 or 5v5, which give players more opportunities to touch the ball, make decisions, and experience different game situations. Small-field games increase player engagement and increase their ability to read the game

Tiger Hearts London Academy - Head Coach St Marys University Twickenham Womens 2nd Team Head Coach SH Football Academy - Head Of Foundation Phase Pro Football Academy - Academy Head Coach FAW UEFA B - in progress
Grassroots football. As a coach I try very hard to change this perception in my players. I’m very old school in my approach despite modern pedagogy. Training is the MOST important aspect of the game. This is where you learn, where you play, where you make new ideas and find solutions. Tournaments are great. And I always say to my players it’s a social event for you to be together as a team for a couple hours and play football. Unfortunately the issue is parents - who treat these summer tournaments as World Cups. If you look at the academy model - super important for clubs & coaches to follow it. NEVER allow a parent to say anything to you or more so allow them but ignore it completely. Training sessions & Matchday is for the players. Parents get too involved and a lot of the time to the detriment of their own child. It’s super annoying. A lot of coaches struggle with this. What’s the best approach? Be very direct - “you are a parent, this is a game for the players and I am the coach. Your job is to be respectful, stand on the outside of the pitch and be quiet.” Now some parents will think you are being “rude” but no, this is honesty and directness that you need to have it’s something pro academies do in fact at pro academies parents are not allowed into the training ground until the coach & players are inside and parents can watch from outside or above. And some academies even ban parents completely from attending. It’s the PLAYERS game, NOT the parents game. My best advice to coaches is always be very clear and direct with this.

In contemporary football, the role of the coach has transcended far beyond simple tactical direction. Today, the coaches who make the difference are not only those who understand the game on the field, but those who also understand the human and technological development of their players. This is the profile that is beginning to stand out in grassroots football teams and in the professional elite, a profile that combines traditional experience with an advanced methodological vision. In this evolution, the concept of the methodological coach has taken on special relevance. This type of coach not only teaches plays, but implements a structured development model that encompasses both tactical maturity and comprehensive player training. To better understand how these coaches are transforming modern football, it is important to analyze the tools and principles they have adopted to optimize both individual and collective performance. The Method: Innovation Based on Solid Principles A central aspect in the evolution of modern football is the creation of methodologies based on scientific and empirical principles. A prominent example of this approach is the Pons Method, a system that has gained notoriety for its ability to integrate gamification techniques, automation of tactical processes and a focus on collective individualization. One of the most innovative principles of the Pons Method is ..

Hey coaches/leaders! How much are you learning/expanding your knowledge from different areas of life/sport? Are you zooming in with the lens and trying to suck it all up from the very best of coaches and learn their every detail and coaching points to gain the edge for you? Or are you having a very broad look at everything and keep the lens wide open - taking the ideas from different sports, arts, culture or whatever imaginable? Normally the path in football coaches goes that football coaches learn from football coaches etc. i feel that there are more ways to expand your knowledge and search deeper. I feel there'are three places to look from… - You can look within football. - You can look inside of sport but outside of football. - You can look outside of sport altogether. Which one are you? I read an article a while ago and they mentioned there that the famous New Zealend Rugby team ‘All Blacks’ as they are called their Coaching team went for a week to learn from the New York Ballet to learn about people performing under pressure, how to perform with precision and accuracy under fatigue and precious situations. That is an expansive perspective of what's possible in other areas outside of sport altogether. Think about other (invasion) sports and from which you could copy some methods to your own game. Basketball - to me a great way to teach players one-on-one defending, the fundamentals are the same (hand-arm cooperation and controlling the opponent let’s say in set piece situations), transitional situations and how to cope with fast paced attacks…many variables that fit within football context Rugby - you get the ball, you run towards the man, you draw him in and you pass. crucial alignment with football how the players want to engage and attract the opponent before passing the player next to you with better space and time capital. Also overloading the opponent to one side, before attacking and penetrating from the opposite side. Chess - even the World Champion Magnus Carlsen finds Chess and Football very similar - the most important thing in both is to control the middle of the board/pitch. Often in chess you attack one side first, the opponent overloads and then you switch, and then you have an advantage on the other side, in terms of space it’s remarkably similar. If you’re the one initiating the action, as opposed to simply reacting, then you’ll be able to control the flow of the game. Message to coach's is - if you only look within your sport anyone can get anything from anywhere with anytime for free, there are no secrets, everyone knows what you know almost, but conversely there's a limitless supply of wonderful ideas outside of sports on the streets...so the coaches of the future, dig a bit deeper and you gonna see that where you really gonna get your advantage. #coachdevelopment #continuouslearning #seekers

WHY DO ACADEMIES EXIST ? Some learning, and thought provoking questions for any aspiring academy manager, coaches and support staff… Is there a first team attached? Why does the academy exist? What is it's purpose? What is the academy’s reason for coming into existence? What do you hope to achieve? What gaps do you hope to fill? That is if there are any? What are your target areas? Set aspirational goals at the beginning, making them more realistic and specific as you progress and begin to understand the details. Aspirational goals: Produce and supply players for? Development where? And for how long? How will you generate income and make the academy sustainable ? How will you recruit and retain? How will you educate your players in your system, to ensure they maintain there educational trajectory alongside their football development? Form a vivid and inspirational framework for the academy. How many of us are brave enough and have the courage and imagination to do this ? Specific details can be filled in later by yourself and the staff. Will your academy have a narrow or wide remit? Manchester City Football Club, we were tasked with developing ‘Technically gifted independent decision making winners’. These are the players that will lead change! In my current role, @Lee Man FC in the Hong Kong Football Association youth elite and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) competitions, we are aspiring to be the pioneers for player development in ASIA! To be inspired everyday one step at a time. We need to dare to dream. Ultimately in player development we are tasked, or should be tasked, with preparing the players in every way for the future game, not today’s. For anyone in an academy position or just starting out on the journey or maybe already in a position of influence, remember – anything is possible and the impossible is nothing. The Power of Teamwork in Football: Lessons from Onimarg Football Academy In football, true success isn’t just about individual talent—it’s about the strength of the team. At Onimarg Football Academy, we’ve always believed that teamwork is what turns a group of good players into a great team. And our recent performances in various tournaments have proven just that. A Story of Collaboration One of our proudest moments came during the 2nd edition of the Rural is Cool Tournament, where teamwork made all the difference. It wasn’t a single player who carried us to victory—it was the collective effort of the entire team that brought the trophy home. Every pass, every tackle, and every decision was made with the team’s success in mind, showing that collaboration truly is the key to winning. We also had the privilege of competing in the Nigeria Women’s President Cup 2024. Although we didn’t take home the trophy, our team played their hearts out and performed admirably on a national stage. This experience only strengthened our resolve and commitment to improve together as a team. In the Ondo State Federation Cup 2024, our teamwork once again shined as we secured the silverware. These achievements remind us that, no matter the outcome, the power of teamwork is what drives us forward. The Onimarg Approach to Teamwork At Onimarg Football Academy, we don’t just develop players—we build teams. From the first day of training, we emphasize communication, trust, and working together toward a common goal. Whether it's winning tournaments or simply improving game by game, our players understand that their success depends on the strength of the team as a whole. Why Teamwork Matters Beyond Football The lessons learned at Onimarg extend far beyond the pitch. Football teaches life skills, and teamwork is one of the most valuable lessons that our players carry with them into their daily lives. Whether they pursue careers in football or other professions, they’ll always be better equipped for success because of the trust, communication, and collaboration they learned on the field. Looking Ahead As we continue to compete in tournaments and grow as a team, we remain committed to the belief that the collective is always stronger than the individual. It’s this mindset that has brought us success and will continue to guide us in the future. So, how has teamwork shaped your experiences—either on the field or in life? We’d love to hear your stories and thoughts. If you’re passionate about football and want to learn more about how our academy fosters teamwork, let’s connect!

Part 3 (No.15-22) of 22 insights for football trialists. 15/ Ask the players Ask players in the academy what it’s like and what things are important to know. For example are there any key terms to know and understand when you're on the pitch. 16/ Playing positions You will most likely play in other positions in training and games even though you have a specific position you have played in at your current team. That’s ok - if it is a very unfamiliar position ask the coach what are the top 3 things you should focus on. 17/ Remember BCE Build Confidence Equity It’s ok to try new things when on trial - do things that will enhance your confidence. Even the professionals make mistakes over and over again! 18/ Be observant Analyse the highest forms of positive habits in all scenarios from the other players and look to replicate them. 19/ Be patient The journey can be long but be patient and enjoy each time you go in. 20/ Technology You will use some for of the following technology on your trial (age & club dependent): Hudl - For Football Clips recording games and training. GPS Vest - For tracking physical output in training and games. Playermaker - For tracking physical & technical outputs. 21/ Your club coach Speak with your club coach to help you develop the skills or tactical insights which have been identified for you to develop whilst on trial. 22/ Change your mindset You are not just going on trial to get into an academy you are adding to your football experience on the journey to hopefully becoming a professional football player.
