Psychological scientist working to increase engagement, motivation, and wellbeing in relationships, work and education. Teaching Program Director (Psychology) @FlindersUni
Important research. Recently we have provided access to this vital training in WELL1003 “Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of others”. Essential for Psyc students but also for all the “frontline” mental health workers: managers, team leaders, teachers, coaches, parents, peer mentors, support workers (and everyone!) Available as an elective to all students at Flinders University (including those studying Psychology). Can be taken as an elective or as part of our Graduate Certificate in Leading Mental Health and Wellbeing (Workplace and Community) or Certificate in Mental Health and Wellbeing (Workplace and Community). https://lnkd.in/g935u-pD.
Our Researchers have recently found that four in five Australian psychologists have gaps in their knowledge on dissociation and cannot accurately identify dissociation symptoms. Study lead, Swinburne's Dr Jessica L. Mackelprang, found that if clinicians are unable to recognise dissociation, the symptoms are likely to go untreated, which may negatively impact outcomes of therapy. I help people who are having a hard time at work feel better and thrive. You don't have to put up with stress, worry, low self confidence or overwhelm.
Most people think they’re a good listener but they’re really not. Common mistakes include: * Not paying attention to everything that’s being said * jumping to conclusions and making assumptions * starting to prepare their answer while the other person is still talking * trying to show empathy by sharing their own experiences * Failing to notice what the other person’s body language is saying * Missing other non verbal cues * rushing to judgment, blaming * failing to keep the conversation safe The result is the person talking can feel that they haven’t been heard and even that they haven’t been treated with respect. Listening well is the first step in effective management and in relationship building. Here’s a useful article on how to be a better listener.
The best listeners share certain behaviors that help them to really tune into and support another person, explains clinical psychologist Ellen Hendriksen. Here's how to emulate them.
