Venture proved to be a black box as both an outsider and an insider. Thankfully, I had a few friends who shared their knowledge and guided me throughout my career. I designed Venture House to be a dedicated space where resources are shared and friends are made. My goal is to help as many emerging VCs, and in the process, founders, as possible through free resources. It's been a year since I began exploring a career in venture capital (VC). Initially, I talked to people outside the industry, which didn't lead me anywhere. However, I soon started building meaningful connections with those who've successfully navigated this path. I made an invaluable connection with Maulik Mehta, a Senior Associate at Arc Ventures in New York. With his extensive experience in VC and a genuine passion for supporting innovative startups, Maulik has been a dynamic friend and mentor, guiding me with insights and advice on breaking into the VC world. As the venture capital industry reels from one of its worst years for fundraising in a decade, it's starting to feel like open season on venture jobs. But layoffs and "quiet firings" are only half the story. Firms don't need to worry about layoffs so much as weary investors leaving of their own volition, according to about a dozen investors who spoke to Business Insider on the topic of venture's bloat. Tired of chasing riches that will take much longer to realize, or eager to get out from under bleeding portfolios, some will decamp from established firms to retire or work a cushy gig in Big Tech. Investors say a number of them are raising their own funds in spite of a capital crunch. "The big risk for venture firms is not layoffs, it's that some of their successful partners decide they don't want to be part of a big bloated team when they could leave and start their own partnership," said a founding partner of a small venture fund who did exactly that. The world of venture capital can seem opaque from the outside. And there’s no two ways about it. VC is a super-private, closed industry built on networks that are by design almost impossible to penetrate. You have to demonstrate you have the hustle and relationships to be able to crack the code + do the job *before* you get in. This is because the best VCs have a founder/ hustler mindset themselves. In this role, the numbers come second. You’re in the business of building the future by partnering with the right people. You first buy into and sell the dream - to founders, investors, LPs - and then actually make it happen. Venture is often equated with ‘hunting down’ amd ‘winning’ the best founders.
