Lidar is a sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and create detailed maps of the surrounding environment. When it comes to detecting a red light, in the context of transportation for example, lidar systems on autonomous vehicles or some traffic monitoring setups can be used. Autonomous vehicles rely on lidar to identify various objects and traffic signals. The lidar emits laser pulses and measures the time it takes for the light to bounce back after hitting an object. When it detects a traffic light, it can analyze the color (in this case, identify if it's green) based on the reflected light characteristics and its position in the scanned area.
