Why are low-income schools not using simple board games to build skills in students? 1. Games like Chess, Rubik cubes help build vital 21st century skills like critical thinking and problem solving. 2. It moves the focus away from the teacher and onto the student to build the skill, leading to high sense of self-direction in learning. 3. The onus to build all the skills through subject related projects or topics by the teacher is reduced. 4. Game strategies and techniques start taking over student conversations in free time too. I remember the "three-move-checkmate" becoming the talk of the class for almost a week. 5. The muscle of critical thinking in young minds sometimes supersedes that of the teacher with games like these. I faced that and it was the most wonderful thing for me and the students. 6. Most importantly, it's a highly scalable solution and cost effective too, in my opinion. Anyone in the #play space share some thoughts on this? #PlayForStudents #ClassroomStrategies #EducationStories #ThePlayPeriod #Chess #CriticalThinking #EdInequity
