What's common in these two photos? Textbooks with gender neutral messages! With the objective to inculcate gender neutrality in the minds of children, the kerala government introduced textbooks, with pictorial representation of family members cutting across genders involved in cooking and other activities. The textbooks of primary classes have a balanced approch in pictorial representations and roles assigned within a family. Azim Premji Foundation #genderequality #education

"A father grating coconut while the mother cooks sambar", does it look like a regular morning scene of most of our households? Not really, right! But it can become a reality. The Kerala government has introduced a groundbreaking initiative to promote gender neutrality in school textbooks! The new textbooks have the pictorial representation of family members across genders involved in cooking. This may look like a simple step but will surely help breaking the stereotype that household chores are solely women's responsibility. This is such a wonderful initiative towards creating a more inclusive and equal society! Not only this, they have also introduced gender-neutral uniforms in some schools. Of course, this shift won't happen overnight, and it involves more than just tweaking some words and pictures. But It will certainly change the narrative and will inculcate the message of gender neutrality in the young minds. Phot credit - https://shorturl.at/CrogC #genderequality

Arghya Sengupta's latest book, "The Colonial Constitution" (2023), offers a comprehensive legal and historical analysis of the Indian Constitution. In it, he contends that despite the professed liberal ideals of the Constitution, it fundamentally remains a colonial document. He asserts that a significant portion— at least one-third—of its provisions, particularly those concerning the institutional framework of the state, are directly derived from the Government of India Act, 1935. While reviewing the book, I examined the recent experiences of queer litigants in Indian constitutional courts and found that Sengupta's thesis holds true: despite its professed liberal aspirations, the Constitution remains deeply entrenched in colonial legacies. #TheColonialConstitution #IndianConstitution #ArghyaSengupta #LegalAnalysis #HistoricalPerspective #ColonialLegacies #QueerLitigants #ConstitutionalCourts #LiberalIdeals #GovernmentOfIndiaAct1935 #LegalScholarship #SocialJustice #Inclusivity #Decolonization

Kerala's introduction of gender neutrality in school textbooks is commendable, but the curriculum has its limits. Real progress depends on actions beyond textbooks—like how teachers choose team captains or class monitors and the impact of subtle gender-based comments. By fostering an environment where parents are influenced by their children through the school, similar to the Finnish education system, can have lasting impacts. Let's be mindful in the classrooms, where the majority of the learning happens through observation! #schooleducation #keralaschool #genderneutality #genderawareness https://lnkd.in/grqHF_-W

A picture is worth a thousand words! From books to uniforms: Kerala schools are embracing gender neutrality- - The Kerala government has taken proactive steps to revise and update its school textbooks to promote the idea of a gender-neutral society among children - a gender-sensitive curriculum for lower and middle schools, with a focus on equal justice. The new curriculum also includes lessons on POCSO rules, democratic and secular values, and scientific temperament. - many schools in the state have shifted to gender-neutral uniforms (shirt and knee length pants) - the Kerala Child Rights Commission decided to replace addressing ‘sir’ and ‘madam’ with the universal term ‘teacher’ in school premises. #genderequality #genderneutral #patriarchy #inclusion Source: https://mybs.in/2dWYbt6 image: @thebetterindia

A long read on the Talk About blog. Matteo Corsalini from the University of Siena explains the development of the EU Court of Justice jurisprudence on corporate neutrality and its impact on believers, specifically women of faith in private and public sectors. "A conclusive and final question has been left unanswered, even in this most recent judgment: namely, could the new-found and pervasive powers of public employers to forbid religious clothing for all staff, whether interacting with customers or not, increase challenges for hijab-wearing women to access the labor market, on the basis of both religion and gender?" https://lnkd.in/eRkAtpFV
