Reposting Michael King's great post with all the awesome replies with my expanded take on the trends we're seeing in search: We're experiencing a fundamental shift in how users search for content and how algorithms evaluate authority. I posted this will mean: 1. more keywords #ranking, with 2. a drop in #impressions, and 3. an increase in #CTR Let's go over how this happens. 1. The Evolution of Search: From #Hobbyist to #Specialist -- The Hobbyist Era: Early on, passionate individuals could create niche sites and attract significant traffic. For example, a BMW Group enthusiast could set up a page about off-market parts and gain meaningful visibility leading to sales. -- The Generalist Era: Sites became broader, aiming to be comprehensive resources. A site covering car parts like CarParts.com with a section on BMW parts could gain traction, tapping into a wide scope of audience needs and opportunities. -- The Specialist Era: Now, users expect depth and authority—not just generic content. Certified BMW specialists and enthusiasts creating in-depth guides covering specific issues that BMW owners face, demonstrating expertise and building authority through smart site integration and comprehensive coverage. see bimmerpost.com as an example site. 2. #TheNewReality for #SEO Broad, general terms that used to drive traffic are becoming less meaningful. The opportunity now lies in focusing on narrow, expertise-driven content that meets specific needs. The Specialist Era rewards those who understand their niche and connect authentically with a specific audience. For #publishers, this means shifting from mass-scale content publishing to a model that balances specialized expertise with the reality that precise content might attract a more intent-focused audience. 3. Navigating #SEOAI #GenerativeAI is changing how search results are generated and how targeting practices are defined. It’s also altering the cost structure for publishers, who need to assess what this means for content production. These changes require thoughtful evaluations—balancing AI's efficiencies with the human expertise needed to thrive in this new Specialist Era. Thanks to Michael King for sparking this discussion.
