Boston Scientific's Farapulse system - a pulsed field ablation approach for treating atrial fibrillation - has shown some impressive outcomes in a head-to-head trial! 🔹 Operates at par with traditional ablation methods but with fewer complications. 🔹 Around the same reduction in arrhythmias as standard-of-care therapies. 🔹 A significant 73.3% of patients saw no signs of atrial fibrillation a year post-procedure. 🔹 Reduced procedure time, with nearly half the X-ray exposure. 🔹 Notably, post-ablation narrowing of the pulmonary veins was only 0.9%, compared to 12% in traditional methods! Exciting news from the arrhythmia world as Biotech companies are revolutionizing the treatment of abnormal heart rhythms with the approval of pulse field ablation (PFA). Damaged cardiac tissue and loss of normal cell-to-cell communication disrupts normal cardiac rhythm and generates arrhythmias. Historically, patients require a cardiac ablation through radiofrequency which uses heat to destroy tissue responsible for erratic heart signals, or cryogenic ablation which freezes tissue. However, these methods lack specificity as it poses the risk of damaging surrounding healthy tissue. Unlike traditional methods, PFA uses targeted high-energy electrical pulses to destroy damaged cardiac tissue without affecting healthy surrounding tissue. This week, Abbott announced the first global procedures of its new VoltPFA system to treat 30 patients in Australia. Last month, Medtronic received FDA approval for its PFA system PulseSelect hardware. J&J's Biosense Webster division also received a green light for its Varipulse platform in Japan, while Boston Scientific expects FDA approval for its Farapulse catheter system by March. I am excited to share our newest paper, published in the Journal of Medical Case Reports. In this article, we described two cases of uncontrolled delayed hematuria after percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The angiographies were normal, and blind angioembolization was carried out rather than potential nephrectomies. The hematuria of the cases dramatically decreased within one hour after the angioembolization. It can be concluded that in cases with normal angiographic findings, embolization of the segmental arteries of the targeted calyx can eliminate hematuria of the patient and prevent further nephrectomy. #angiography #embolization #hematuria #pcnl https://lnkd.in/d_rPeSXb
