A classic, 1820s Regency-style London townhouse?  Actually, this is more a Bridgerton-style tribute than an original Jane Austen. The original building was destroyed in the war and rebuilt with a modern frame construction. While the façade appears original, nothing beyond the front entrance door pre-dates 1950!   It could be good news for the leaseholders, though, if they wish to make alterations to their flats. That's because, unlike in the original building, the majority of internal walls in a framed construction like this will be non-load bearing.  Once confirmed by a structural engineer’s report, those walls can be demolished without structural support - with significant cost savings! #Heritage #LicenceToAlter #LoadBearingWalls

*** THROWBACK THURSDAY *** As we're in the thick of industry awards season, we thought we'd look back on a previously nominated project - Cumberland Place, a #student #accommodation block in #southampton, consisting of Gebrik #brickslip #cladding, Metal Technology Ltd windows, louvers, curtain walling, aluminium composite panels and PPC aluminium. Completed in 2018, this 12 storey building is a fantastic example of industry collaboration, teamwork, resilience and client-centric thinking. It was not without its complications though! T&T Facades was awarded the contract just prior to the Grenfell tragedy. Having already submitted a fully compliant and tested solution, post Grenfell every aspect of the project went under intense scrutiny, resulting in a total re-evaluation of the specifications on every element of the cladding build-up, also needing to anticipate likely legislation and regulatory changes. The Three Guineas is a Grade II listed building designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It was built in 1840, initially to serve as the central railway ticket office. Today, it houses a pub at the train station. Owner Fuller’s commissioned Thomann-Hanry® to carry out works of restoration to the façade and redecoration of all timber work including leadwork to the severely decayed clock tower. Due to location of the clock tower, and the length of time the job would require, it is one of the few times where we recommended the use of scaffolding. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴 After the great fire of 1666 that levelled London, the world-famous architect, Sir Christopher Wren, was commissioned to rebuild St Paul’s Cathedral. One day in 1671, Sir Christopher Wren observed three bricklayers on a scaffold, one crouched, one half-standing and one standing tall, all working very hard and fast. Sir Christopher Wren asked the first bricklayer, “What are you doing?” to which the bricklayer replied, “I’m a bricklayer. I’m working hard laying bricks to feed my family.” The second bricklayer, responded, “I’m a builder. I’m building a wall.” But the third bricklayer, the most productive of the three and the group's future leader, replied with a gleam in his eye, “I’m a cathedral builder. I’m building a great cathedral." The story of the three bricklayers is a metaphor for the power of purpose, where the “cathedral builder,” demonstrates a personal expression of purpose that transforms the meaning of his work. For the first bricklayer, building the wall was a job. For the second bricklayer, it was an occupation. This post reminded me of a good talk I had with Curtis Goldsborough yesterday. Solutions to tragedies like what we're seeing now in California need to involve a multi-level approach: from state-wide guidance and building codes to local zoning and regulations to on-the-ground homeowner guidance. We'll get through these difficult times, and the tragic losses being experienced, but there are lessons we need to learn. Let's make pulling together being about not only supporting those that were hit this time (I just made a donation to the first link below - I hope every little bit helps), but also about looking forward to how we can prevent more losses like these.
