Today is International Women’s Day, a day for celebration and recognition for everyone who identifies as a woman. We celebrate the broken glass ceilings, the many achievements women across the centuries have accomplished despite every difficulty thrown our way. We celebrate the wisdom each woman throughout history has deposited in the collective women-hood memory. But today is also a day to recognize how much more we must do. Women's rights ARE human rights and we are not a minority but more than half of this planet’s population. Let us recognize that every success we achieve must be celebrated twofold - we celebrate the achievement and that we’ve achieved it despite the difficulties in our way. So here’s to all the strong, amazing, and resilient women out there! Happy International Women’s Day! Let us make tomorrow a better place for us, the next generations, and the planet. Celebrating International Women's Day: A Tribute to Inspirational Women and the Call for Collective Support Today, as we celebrate International Women's Day, I am reminded of the extraordinary women who have shaped my life with their courage, determination, and resilience. These women's stories embody the power of overcoming barriers and leading transformative lives. Foremost in my heart is my mother, a remarkable woman whose story astonishes me to this day. During the tumultuous times of the Second World War, she served in military intelligence, a role shrouded in secrecy and immense responsibility. For decades, her contributions remained a hidden chapter of her life, bound by the Official Secrets Act. Only ten years ago, when the act was lifted, were we able to fully grasp her remarkable role during those trying times. Her bravery and dedication were finally recognized with a well-deserved medal. Her unwavering belief that women can achieve anything they set their minds to has been a guiding beacon in my life, encouraging me to pursue my dreams with the same tenacity. In my career at Target, I encountered pioneering women like Peggy Ryan, one of the first female store managers, Ngaire Bates, the first female buying manager, Launa Inman, the first female CEO, and Enza McLeod, the first female Regional Manager. Their battles for equality in the workplace have paved the way for future generations. However, celebrating these achievements brings to light an essential issue: the burden of championing and sustaining progress for all future women should not fall on just a few. Women often prioritize the needs of others over their own, especially regarding personal and professional investment. We need to encourage women to seize opportunities for their financial security, confidence, and support. This responsibility doesn't lie with women alone. We need male allies to actively participate in creating an inclusive environment. Their support is crucial in dismantling systemic barriers and promoting a culture of inclusivity and support. As we honour the contributions of women, let's also focus on building a sustainable ecosystem for their growth and development. This International Women's Day, let's commit to not only applauding women's achievements but also to supporting their continuous growth.
