I thoroughly enjoyed the US Business Summit in Auckland this week. Services exports to the US grew 10% every year in the past 10 years largely due to the tech sector going ‘gang busters’. University of Auckland Vice Chancellor Dawn Freshwater emphasised that the innovation race is upon us and we need to create more partnerships, and use our values as a base to progress our research, science and innovation. Tech is so important to Auckland and that is why we have a Tech strategy (Tech T`amaki Makaurau). The industry-led strategy this year includes fostering partnerships with offshore tech hubs, talent and research hubs, investors and companies. Tech Tāmaki Makaurau, is cented on attracting home-grown and international talent, and growing our thriving creative tech, medtech, aerospace, cleantech sectors in particular. The US Summit was a great opportunity to reconnect. As the economic development agency, we are so excited about the opportunities in the US (and other markets of course) for Auckland business, especially our broader tech sector.   It was great to hear from @John Ballingal Jonty Kelt Guy Horrocks, David Downs, Toby Littin among many others reinforcing the huge business opportunities in the US market. Make way for the Northern Metropolis! Hong Kong will develop its Northern Metropolis (NM) to be a technology city. It shall be a prime investment destination focusing on international innovation as well as be the premier gateway for international companies accessing the Greater Bay Area (GBA) of Guangdong Province. As a new engine for the future development of Hong Kong, the NM will inject new economic impetus into the city by attracting new capital, investments, and innovative enterprises from around the world. Spanning over 30,000 hectares, around one-third of Hong Kong’s total area, the NM will provide about 500,000 new housing units and create 500,000 new jobs upon full development. There will be 4 Major Zones: 1. High-end Professional Services and Logistics Hub Zone in Hung Shui Kiu connecting to Qianhai Shenzhen; 2. Building and buying great businesses remains my core focus, but speaking continues to be a joy. I was penning an internal memo this morning when my mind went to my recent visit to Gaziantep, Turkey, where I was invited to speak on Innovation in Cities, alongside a bright and talented panel, at the Global Meeting of Horasis a visionary community founded by Frank-Jürgen Richter. I was the only Jamaican in attendance, as I often find myself and I'd like to think I represented well. Here are a few insights on how innovation drives positive outcomes for cities and countries at large by driving economic growth, enhancing the quality of life, and fostering sustainable development. 1. Economic Growth: Innovation hubs in global cities attract businesses, talent, and investment, leading to job creation and increased GDP. Cities like Silicon Valley, London, and Shanghai have become economic powerhouses due to their emphasis on technology and innovation. 2. Quality of Life: Innovations in healthcare, transportation, and urban planning improve the daily lives of residents. For example, smart city initiatives use technology to optimize traffic flow, reduce pollution, and enhance public safety, making cities more livable and efficient. 3. Sustainable Development: Innovative solutions address environmental challenges by promoting renewable energy, reducing waste, and increasing energy efficiency. Cities like Copenhagen and Singapore are leading the way in sustainable urban development through green technologies and smart infrastructure. 4. Social Inclusion: Innovation fosters social inclusion by creating opportunities for education, employment, and entrepreneurship. It bridges the gap between different socio-economic groups, ensuring that the benefits of progress are widely shared. 5. Global Competitiveness: Cities that prioritize innovation maintain a competitive edge on the global stage. They attract international businesses and talent, becoming key players in the global economy. 6. Cultural and Creative Industries: Innovation drives growth in cultural and creative industries, making cities vibrant cultural centres. This enhances tourism and cultural exchange, enriching the social fabric of the city.
