With how incredibly deep technology is woven into education, the impact of cyber attacks is on the rise. In this article, Sharon Mullins said: "You're basically telling every teacher across the trust that whatever they had planned that day, they can no longer teach with immediate effect," Secure Schools CEO Paul Alberry also went on to say: “IT teams have not had to operate and defend to this level before," Whether you’re just starting to look into cyber security, or if you’re looking to further strengthen your existing position, the Secure Schools team of experts can help. #cybersecurity #education #secureschools #bbcnews

Even as we approach the last stretch of academic year, attacks aren't decreasing. You'd imagine that things start to quiet down as we approach summer but cyber attacks are only rising as we approach the end of academic year. You should never let your guard down as that is the moment hackers are waiting for. #cybersecurity #itsupportservices #education https://lnkd.in/dFKbV7VC

Are our schools safe 🤔 ? Recent reports highlight a disturbing trend: cyber attacks on educational institutions are on the rise, with incidents up by 55% in 2023 compared to the previous year. Schools like Brockington College have experienced significant disruptions, from cancelled lessons to compromised student data, due to these sophisticated attacks. The increasing reliance on digital technology in education has left schools vulnerable to various cyber threats, including #ransomware. These attacks not only hinder day-to-day operations but also threaten sensitive data related to students and staff. 📍 Why this matters: The shift towards digital has transformed educational environments, making them targets for cybercriminals. Attacks often lead to operational shutdowns, with schools like Granville Academy forced to close temporarily, exacerbating challenges in an already strained educational system. You can find out more about these cyber attacks following the link ➡ https://lnkd.in/gJzRMMyr. 📍 Cybersecurity in Education: It's crucial for educational institutions to adopt robust cybersecurity measures. The industry requires not just reactive strategies but proactive planning and defense mechanisms to protect against and mitigate the impacts of cyber attacks. Schools need to be equipped with the tools to safeguard their infrastructure and the sensitive data they hold. At BD Emerson, we understand the unique cybersecurity needs of the educational sector. Our tailored cybersecurity solutions help protect institutions from the growing menace of cyber threats. Visit our cybersecurity services page for the educational industry https://lnkd.in/dmDf-89F. Let’s strengthen schools' defenses against cyber threats and ensure a safe educational environment for all. #Cybersecurity #EducationSector #DigitalDefense

The "trickle down effect" of advanced tools, tactics, and procedures (TTPs) has begun to impact schools in the UK. There was a time when I was in high school here in the US that a single IT technician with a good understanding of active directory and subnetting could operate an entire school's IT systems alone. That time is over. Malware toolkits and platforms are available in products and "as-a-Service" format, many are open source or very low cost. They're easy enough to use that relatively unsophisticated hackers are attacking schools with them. This wasn't just unlikely to see network-wide brute force attacks, or ransomware (back then "wiper") malware used against schools in the early 2000's, it was unthinkable. Now, it seems common. Schools are getting shutdown, or limping along without computers and point of sale devices, for days at a time. Can we call this a global threat already? https://lnkd.in/eGQJS-nH

Perhaps we need a pendamic style response to global cyber threats as these now disrupt nearly every aspect of our lives, potentially endangering people. That may take a long time to materialise. What measures do businesses and institutions need to take in the mean time to protect their customers and users? First is the realisation that 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲 can put enough barriers in front of cyber criminals to reduce the threat substantially. Second, iron clad cyber security need not break the bank. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘅 with the technology we use, we just don't know that they exist or how to use them. Additional measures can be adopted incrementally using a risk based approach. Third, we need 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 before it leads to further insidious acts. Fourth, we need to 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁, 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, both iteratively and incrementally, using a risk based approach to prioritise vulnerabilities we identify. Last, but not least, we need measures in place to 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀. This should fall under our disaster recovery strategy and practices. We need to 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 to test how quickly we recover from cyber incidents This may look like a lot for a small business. Instead of procrastinating on the scale of challenge facing them, it is best to start taking small incremental steps and measuring progress to chart the course ahead. #cybersecurity #technology #leadership #strategy https://lnkd.in/gVXGA6-X

As we edge closer to the end of the school year and excited cheers ring out up and down the country (I’m talking about the teachers…not the students!) - a dark cloud looms overhead. School closure periods like the summer holidays and Christmas, are the prime season for cyber criminals to attack your school. The seasonal element of cyber attacks is nowhere more prevalent than in education. So before you break up for summer - I recommend you give this recent webinar a watch. Why not get a group of staff together and watch it as a group - I think you’ll find it both interesting and useful. #education #schools #schoolholidays #cyberattacks #ransomware #dataprotection Moore ClearComm Moore Kingston Smith https://lnkd.in/eTbz9QtH
