Well friends, usually if you read this column you'll see me railing on one of my favorite love-to-hate streaming services. This column's a little different and I hope that it gets some traction out there because it's a story that needs to be told. Here's the real question Let's say you use one of those live TV streaming services. I mean like DIRECTV Stream, Sling, YouTube TV, that sort of thing. #streaming #streamingsaturday

Clear choices are always good as one size rarely fits all. A free, ad-funded tier works great for channel partners like telcos, banks or retailers. It allows them to cost effectively bundle a subscription benefit with their own product or service, but then provides a way to generate revenues by offering attractive upgrade plans. Only offering an ad-funded service removes any additional revenue opportunities from these channel partnerships. Similarly, only offering a premium service makes channel bundling harder. #subscriptions #customerbenefits #channelpartnerships
So, Rupert Murdoch's Fox Corporation is entering the UK's highly competitive free, ad-supported video streaming market. What should we expect? It's true that with rising costs, the market could be primed for free streaming services, with UK subscribers already spending almost £700 per year on subscription services such as streaming, according to our research https://lnkd.in/eATGVGdj. However let's not forget that originally free ad-supported services like iTVX and Channel 4 eventually moved to a subscription model to help us avoid the ads. On the other side of the market, previously ad-free 'premium' streaming services like Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios and Netflix have introduced ad-supported tiers to cut subscription costs. Is it inevitable that the market moves to the middle? Relying on purely ad-supported content could be risky — will the business case work? On one hand, it widens access to those who have been previously priced out. On the other hand, our data revealed that over a quarter of subscribers have cancelled services due to the introduction of ads onto streaming. Put simply — ads can be a turn-off. Add that to the fact that introducing yet another subscription to an already crowded space might be tricky. Two-thirds of Brits already say there are "too many" subscriptions right now. Good luck, Rupert. You might want to read our European Subscription Wars report for some more insight into this market. https://lnkd.in/evKwbVrZ #Streaming #Subscriptions #UK

🇬🇧 In the UK, broadcaster video-on-demand (VOD) services are increasing in popularity and actually growing faster than giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime! Viewer minutes for these platforms have gone up by 11% in the first half of this year, compared to a 4% decline for streaming platforms. What's the cause?🤔 One possible reason could be the cost of living crisis which is driving viewers towards free or lower-cost options. Also, the launch of new platforms like Freely, which brings together the UK's main broadcasters, may also be contributing to this resurgence. More evidence that traditional broadcasters are adapting and evolving their digital strategies to remain competitive. #Streaming #MediaTrends #BVOD

Why Are Free, Ad-Supported Streamers Beating Out Competitors? What do Tubi, the Roku Channel and Pluto TV have in common for the second month in a row? “Free is a great driver to get people to try something,” John Buffone, vice president and media entertainment industry adviser at market research company Circana, told The Hollywood Reporter. “Free doesn’t keep you there.” Viewers are responding to the massive libraries services like Tubi offer, as well as the diversity of their content. “We have hundreds of Korean dramas. We have hundreds of UFO docs. If you want to watch silent films or anime, we have that. And so what we’re finding is these fandoms are really kind of discovering what’s happening at Tubi and that’s driving that viewership,” Tubi CEO Anjali Sud told THR. Starting this week, Amazon Prime TV series and films will feature commercials for the first time. With the streaming industry constantly evolving, choosing the right lineup of TV streaming services has become a more sophisticated process than just comparing prices. According to NPR, subscribers understandably start there, but it's important to consider other factors such as content selection and user experience. #streamingservices #tvstreaming #AmazonPrimeVideo #contentselection #userexperience
