Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) play a pivotal role in achieving long-term organizational goals and prove to be a significant asset in creating inclusive workplaces. What is an ERG? ERGs are voluntary, employee-led groups that bring together individuals with shared characteristics or experiences, such as but not limited to ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. As we bid farewell to March, the month dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of women worldwide, it's essential to reflect on the progress we've made in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the construction industry. Throughout this month, we've had the opportunity to highlight the invaluable role of women in shaping the built environment and driving innovation in our field. Women continue to break barriers and defy stereotypes in traditionally male-dominated industries, from architects and engineers to project managers and tradespeople. Their talents, skills, and perspectives enrich our teams and elevate the quality of our work. As Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging professionals in the construction industry, we must recognize and celebrate our workforce's diversity, including women's achievements at all levels of the industry. As we transition into April, let us carry the spirit of Women's Month forward by redoubling our efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable workplace for all. On Friday I had the privilege to sit with a group of women, from the Global Majority, who work in senior positions in the construction industry (sponsored by Arup and Bryter Work Work) for an executive round table. The space was beautifully facilitated by the incredible Anita Phagura 🍉 (Inclusion In Construction) and I was there to create a graphic record of the event (you can see it here!) I was there as an ‘honourary soul sister’ as an attendee put it, but I was also aware of my white heritage and the role that might play in the room. At the start of the session I explained my intention to be open, objective and observant. I had come to hear, and do my best to record with accuracy and confidentiality. So it was uncomfortable, but sadly not surprising to hear that white women are a major issue to global majority women within workplaces. And as a white woman who had the privilege to hear this first hand, I’ve spent time this weekend reflecting on why that might be, and the messages that I want to share for the women like me, who want to be better allies. 💖 Acknowledge that there is an issue. So quickly we can run to defensiveness, but take the time to listen and get curious, read up on the problem, and reflect. Prioritise educating yourself in ways that don’t create additional labour for those you are trying to support. 💖 If you are a white woman in power, consider the power structures you are part of, or boards that you sit on and challenge for better representation. One of the key issues raised in the roundtable was that the lack of representation at the top, means that the organisation itself is not always shaped well or supportive when new hires are diverse. It contributes to the stagnation of global majority talent in lower paid / lower authority positions. 💖 As a white woman, my struggle in the patriarchy is real, but it is not the same or comparable to those with other intersections of disadvantage to deal with. We don’t need to feel threatened by making room for discussion and consideration of feminism that includes other intersections, such as race, disability, sexuality, class or poverty. 💖 Are we making space for this type of supportive, constructive conversation within work? Is there dialogue that enables real change and learning?
