Why aren't more students choosing food science careers in Southern California? This article in the Journal of Food Science investigates a surprising disconnect in this region's science of food industry. Though there's a high demand for food scientists in the region, enrollment in these programs is declining. By examining what factors influence students' decisions to pursue (or avoid) food science careers in SoCal, researchers aim to identify reasons behind the enrollment decline and suggest solutions to attract more students. Congratulations to Andrew Gehring's team from USDA ARS for publishing the first Oxford Nanopore Technologies proof of concept on bacterial quantification in food safety! This work uncovers a new capability of nanopore sequencing that can allow researchers to: 🧬 Measure the size of your problem/contamination (not just absence/presence of the pathogen) 🧬 Verify the efficacy of your food processing and cleaning/sanitation methods 🧬 Improve your FSIS performance standards (from category 3 to 1)
Mayo Clinic Researcher, Drexel Chemistry '24, Truman ‘23, Udall ‘22, Goldwater ‘22, AISES Junior U.S. National Student Representative,
I am very excited and proud to share that a paper I have been working on was accepted and published by a peer-reviewed journal as of today (and I am first-author)! Throughout my time as an undergraduate student, I have worked part-time as a student trainee at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) - Eastern Regional Research Center - Characterization and Interventions for Foodborne Pathogen Unit in Wyndmoor, PA, where I had the unique opportunity to conduct a semi-independent research project. I was able to conceptualize, design, and execute the project, as well as take the initiative to draft, revise, and edit the manuscript titled Investigating the Quantification Capabilities of a Nanopore-Based Sequencing Platform for Food Safety Application via External Standards of Lambda DNA and Lambda Spiked Beef (https://lnkd.in/d_yAPyxB). Throughout this research experience, I was able to see a project through from the beginning to end, troubleshoot along the way, and learn about the publication process more in-depth. Furthermore, this research is foundational for future studies in food safety. Thank you to all those who have supported me, as well as the amazing mentorship and guidance from my supervisor, Dr. Andrew Gehring!

The Rhode Island Agriculture and Food Systems Fellowship Program (AFSFP) seeks funding to mentor students in experiential learning opportunities focused on sustainable agriculture, food nutrition, and agricultural policy. Students from URI and CCRI collaborate with faculty on research and extension projects, developing skills in plant science, food safety, policy, and science communication. The program includes hands-on projects, externships, and teaching practicums in local schools, fostering leadership and professional growth. Fellows engage in community education and industry partnerships, preparing for careers in sustainable agriculture and food systems. #reeu #nifaimpacts #usda @usdagov

We were thrilled to work with URUS and our sister organizations to bring together five Canadian and 14 American collegiate students to participate in the fifth annual Dairy Consulting Experience (DCE)! Students spent a week of their J-term gaining a practical understanding of how topics such as genetics, reproduction, calves and data are applied to progressive dairies through a consultative approach. Throughout the program students: 🤝 connect with professionals 🤝 participate in case studies 🤝 tour nearby farms 🤝 present their findings With insight into the software that supports these programs, DCE sets students up for a future career in the dairy industry.

Excited to announce the completion of my dissertation on the topic "nutrient, physicochemical and sensory evaluation of peanut yogurt fortified with Jackfruit seed". After months of research, analysis, and dedication, I'm proud to share the culmination of my academic journey. A big thank you to my advisors, mentors, and supporters who guided me along the way. Looking forward to applying the insights gained as I embark on the next chapter. #DissertationComplete #MilestoneAchieved #PostGraduationReady"

Closing One Chapter, Beginning Another! I'm excited to share that I've completed my final exam as an undergraduate student of Food Science at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology! Some years ago, I wrote on my bio that I will be graduating in the year 2024 as a Food scientist. Eventhough it seemed impossible because of strike and delay in the school calendar, I still went ahead and wrote it with Faith and God did it! Honestly, my course of study is what I'll choose over and over again. Although, it was a whole lot borrowing courses from almost faculties in the school, gathering knowledge here and there, knowing something about everything, but now I appreciate going through that process. Next Stop: Induction into the Food Science profession!🥳 #NewGrad #FoodScience #CareerBeginnings
