🔥 The Unseen Pitfalls of Project Management: How Ignoring EVMS Can Destroy Your Project 🔥
Many project teams - both contractors and government entities - fail to see the true value of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS). In past projects, I’ve encountered this mindset firsthand, where leaders were more concerned with the cost of implementing EVMS than the potential it had to save their projects.
What they didn’t realize is that a well-functioning EVMS does so much more than track costs. It provides early warning indicators, strengthens project management practices, and ensures projects stay on track and within budget. Yet, resistance often stems from miscommunication and a reluctance to change.
In one case, both sides were so focused on the upfront costs that they lost sight of the benefits - better scheduling, change management, cost collection, and accurate forecasting, to name a few. It wasn’t until we gained executive buy-in through education and coaching that the value of EVMS became clear.
Ignoring EVMS also poses compliance risks. Failure to properly track performance under FARs/DFARs can result in inaccurate reporting and jeopardize contract funding. Misallocating costs without a compliant system risks violations of Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), leading to audits, penalties, or contract termination. And inaccurate financial reporting, violating GAAP, can severely undermine project financials and create further discrepancies in project reporting.
This kind of resistance is common, but it’s crucial to break down these walls early. EVMS isn't just another cost - it’s an investment in the success and sustainability of your project, and ultimately, your organization’s future.
If you're encountering similar challenges, remember: EVMS isn’t an obstacle to your project; it’s the roadmap to delivering it successfully.
