🌟 HCH team in Greece 🇬🇷 Last week, Heyd Más & Luca Polidori, were in Greece to discuss the next steps of the Biomodel4Region Horizon Europe project. Great progress has been made in developing regional roadmaps for the bioresources industry, taking into account local needs and opportunities. HCH also contributed to the discussions during Western Macedonia's workshop organized by CluBE (Kozani), aimed at local stakeholders. Insightful conversations as to current challenges faced by the private sector and clear next steps were identified to design a regional roadmap that will help overcome them. Next in the Biomodel4Regions is the workshop organized by HCH in Zeeland on June 26. This one-day workshop with the quadruple helix stakeholders of the bio-based economy in the Delta Region aims to establish a blueprint for the bioeconomy strategy in the Provincie Zeeland and the region. 🗓 There’s still time to register! Have you ever wondered what the role of traders is in achieving sustainability outcomes in agriculture-food value chains like coffee? I'm happy to share our new publication, authored by my amazing colleague Angela Navarrete-Cruz https://lnkd.in/ed5jAPBP 👇 While much attention has been focused on producers and consumers, this paper highlights how traders play a pivotal role in advancing sustainability goals. By analyzing the intricate relationships and governance mechanisms between farmers and traders, our research sheds light on the significant impact that traders have on the overall resilience and sustainability of agricultural systems. Using the Colombian coffee sector as a case study, the paper explores various governance mechanisms that facilitate the connection between farmers and traders. These mechanisms are key to understanding how traders can both directly and indirectly influence sustainability efforts within the sector. Through these governance structures, traders not only support the adoption of sustainable practices among farmers but also help ensure the stability and longevity of the value chain, benefiting all stakeholders involved. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of traders in agri-food value chains and offer valuable insights into how traders can be effectively integrated into broader sustainability initiatives. By recognizing and harnessing the influence of traders, policymakers and industry leaders can develop more comprehensive strategies to enhance sustainability across the entire value chain, ultimately leading to more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.

European Business Summit invited our Director General Geneviève Pons-Deladrière to join a dynamic discussion on “The Future of Agriculture: Balancing Sustainability, Succession, and Global Trade,” alongside Mihail Dumitru and Olivier de Matos, and moderated by Jack Parrock. A central question discussed during the panel session was how we can reconcile economic, social, and environmental sustainability in the farming sector. Her answer: collaboration among all actors of the agri-food chain is essential. The Strategic Dialogue has marked a pivotal step towards driving sustainable change, and it is important now to keep the political momentum. She highlighted one major achievement of the dialogue: the emphasis on demand-side policies, including those related to dietary patterns. However, she also pointed out a key shortcoming: the absence of international considerations in the recommendations, which must be addressed. When asked about the challenges posed by the potential EU enlargement to include Ukraine, she noted that such an expansion would require a reconsideration of the criteria for allocating CAP subsidies. This could pave the way at last for a highly desirable revision of the policy, shifting focus away from farm size and towards social and environmental criteria.
