Leisure, Sport and Business Minded Individual Councillor - Tattenhoe Ward Deputy Mayor for Milton Keynes 24/25 Check out:- linktr.ee/james_lancaster
I’ve been thinking a lot recently on how human factors show how people interact with systems - such as Sat Nav’s, and our capability to focus on tasks when we get distracted. I have read, and watched the film of Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River after both engines failed. This is a great example of human factors in action, and I will tell you why. Sully wasn’t prepared for this to happen, nor was expecting it. But what he did have was experience, and put that quick thinking and deep knowledge to create a solution. It took sometime, like any unexpected event, and he reacted to think what can be done. Those 30 seconds to a minute, there was no warning, there was no simulation of it goes wrong to try again, as it was real life. Both the captain and co-pilot had to make decisions under pressure. It was a crisis, and Sully took his experience into place. But he tried all he could first, and realised it can be done to what everyone would expect, and that was back to the airport. His years of experience provided him with a wealth of knowledge and skills that were crucial for both assessing the condition of the aircraft and executing the emergency landing. Sullenberger's ability to understand the dynamics of the unfolding emergency enabled him to make an informed decision to land on the Hudson rather than risk a crash in a populated area. The collaboration with co-pilot Jeff Skiles and cabin crew illustrated the importance of effective communication and teamwork in emergency scenarios. The rigorous simulation training put forward during court showed that pilots were simulating the route back to the airport, with prior warning, and trained to execute knowing the information beforehand. What they forgot, was the human factor. This showed that Sully did what was smart and right. On the same note - a receptionist may learn how to operate a system. You learn the data, and what is programmed. You’re expected it to be quick and easy. Many don’t take into consideration, that the phone might ring, taking you away from it, or the a spillage in an area, again taking you away, that makes the process longer. It is a human factor not considered into the system. I write this, as we plan our trips as I mentioned via sat nav. A time is scheduled on when you get there. But relasitically, it doesn’t predict the traffic or a crash to cause the traffic. It doesn’t predict you stopping for the services, or even to go to the shop for instance. It doesn’t take in you parking up at your destination, and being on your phone, or taking a call. The moral is, you can have the data and what is expected, but remember, we are all human, and we should always reflect those times into consideration, that makes everything real.

As the Senate prepares to mark up its Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization bill on Thursday in the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, CPARA urges Senators to prioritize passage of a long-term FAA Reauthorization package that protects safe and efficient air travel and opposes misguided efforts to add more flights to at-capacity Reagan National Airport (DCA). CPARA calls on Senators to act on the House-passed bipartisan FAA Reauthorization bill and ensure a safe, efficient FAA Reauthorization package without unsafe initiatives to add more flights to DCA – in line with local airport authority Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority's (MWAA) clear stance that DCA is at capacity (https://lnkd.in/eg8mxe3b) and the FAA's confirmation (https://lnkd.in/eE_3f64D) that “DCA is more delay prone than other airports” and that more flights would further worsen delays. Last summer’s bipartisan House vote opposing an effort to add more flights to DCA in its bipartisan FAA package was a vote to protect safe and efficient air travel, showcasing the ever-growing consensus that more flights will increase delays, cancellations, congestion, and safety concerns at what is already the busiest commercial runway in the country (https://lnkd.in/eJxD-crU). The experts have weighed in and the facts are clear: DCA is at capacity and cannot safely accommodate more flights. Adding more flights to the overburdened airport – which is already delay-prone and ranks third in the nation (https://lnkd.in/eDZUkXFe) for runway incursions – will undermine traveler safety and convenience. We urge the Senate to pass the FAA Reauthorization bill without any measures that stand to make travel worse. Scott York President The Coalition To Protect America's Regional Airports (CAPARA)
