THE ESSENTIAL AMERICAN CITIZEN: A Reflection on Citizen Responsibilities in a Republic WHO HOLDS THE POWER TO DECLARE WAR? In 1787, Founder Benjamin Franklin's proclamation at the Constitutional Convention was a defining moment in American history, solidifying the nation as a republic where the power ultimately rests with the people through their elected representatives. Franklin's caution about the repercussions of neglecting essential citizen duties is a stark reminder of the importance of citizens fulfilling their obligations, particularly in crucial decisions regarding war and peace. However, in the present day, the American public has largely relinquished its role in determining matters of war, leaving such decisions to a select few while remaining detached from the realities of conflict. Despite significant human and economic costs, citizens often lack awareness of the underlying reasons for ongoing wars and the national security interests at stake. This disconnect is further exacerbated by a lack of public discourse and debate on military engagements, including the recent Ukraine Proxy War with Russia, despite widespread disapproval from the populace. The staggering toll of wars since 9/11, as estimated by Brown University's Watson Institute, underscores the urgent need for citizen engagement in matters of national defense. With millions of lives lost, trillions of dollars spent, and enduring repercussions both domestically and internationally, the consequences of unchecked militarism are severe. The shift towards a professionalized military and reliance on contractors raises concerns about the erosion of democratic values and the sustainability of perpetual warfare. To reverse this trend and uphold the principles of self-governance enshrined in the Constitution, Americans must reclaim their agency in decisions of war and peace. This necessitates educating themselves on the genuine national security interests at stake, advocating for transparency and accountability in military actions, and actively engaging with elected representatives to ensure that war decisions align with the people's will. By demanding a return to the constitutional requirement of a formal declaration of war or withholding financial support for unauthorized military engagements, citizens can exert their influence and safeguard the republic from the perils of unchecked militarism. The choice rests with the American Citizenry: to restore the republic's foundations and preserve the liberties it guarantees or to continue toward tyranny and subjugation. By embracing their civic responsibilities and actively participating in decisions of war and peace, citizens can uphold the democratic ideals upon which the nation was founded and ensure a future guided by the principles of self-rule and collective well-being.

Outstanding convocation address. Not surprising, coming from a fellow Longhorn alum. So here’s the summary of it, using “American” football terms, i.e. Offense, Defense, and Special team. Btw, I too am still reliving that Jan 1 Sugar Bowl game and hoping each time that the outcome was different... lol! Offense = Courage. Having the guts to shoot when the chance arises. Opportunities don't always present themselves twice, so you have to be prepared to act. Following your convictions even when it seems like the odds are stacked against you. It will usually require you to take the less-traveled path, which can occasionally be lonely, but you should still go for it. Defense = Grit, perseverance, tenacity. Having the determination to keep going when you “temporarily” fail. And if you live long enough, this will eventually come to pass. Make sure you keep going forward while taking lessons from your mistakes and disappointments. How far (altitude) you can go depends on how you approach every scenario, and it usually pays off to always keep a positive attitude. Special team. Often overlooked, but equally important to succeed. Special teams many times make subtle but very tangible impacts during the course of a game that can be the critical factor between winning and losing. Having a unified team can make all the difference. No one can do it alone, just as no man is an island by himself. So, build your team carefully and let them be your support, the wind beneath your wings when needed. Congratulations to all of the graduates!
