Despite the company’s successful merger with Zynga, we’re still yet to see any Take-Two mobile games based on its legacy IP. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the radio silence during a recent interview at a TD Cohen conference. As well as owning mobile and social gaming giant Zynga, Take-Two Interactive also manages Rockstar Games, 2K, and indie games publisher Private Division, but games like GTA and the Red Dead Redemption series are still stuck on consoles and PC. When Take-Two announced the Zynga takeover, Zelnick discussed plans to develop and optimize new mobile games based on the company’s “core intellectual property” using Zynga’s success in the mobile market. Epic Games has been giving away free games on the Epic Games Store since 2019 as a way to draw users into its storefront and platform. Some are asking now: was it a good idea? Evidently the program is still going so there must be some benefit for Epic Games. Epic Games’ CEO Tim Sweeney recently stated that while the free game giveaways have been good for business, not all of the exclusivity deals were good investments. Sweeney mentioned how the free games program has been “just magical” and “very economical” even if it seems counterintuitive at first. In this business model, Epic Games will pay a game developer a chunk of money for the right to distribute the game to its users (at a fraction of the price that Facebook or Google Search ads cost) which brings in users to the Epic Games Store at a very economical rate. Sweeney mentions how this is a popular marketing & launch tactic among game developers as some of them use this to drive user awareness of their next game. According to Epic Games itself, the Epic Games store had over 270 million PC users in 2023 and the Free Games Program brought 86 free titles to the store last year, worth over $2,000 USD. What do you think of this user acquisition/marketing tactic from Epic Games? Would love to hear a discussion in the comments. Single-player games present a sustainable and increasingly attractive financial prospect in the gaming industry, despite the dominance of live-service models. As the live-service market becomes oversaturated and user demand wanes, single-player games like Elden Ring prove their significant revenue potential. Many developers face risks with failed live-service ventures, making a shift back to single-player experiences more appealing. These games align with older gamers' preferences due to lifestyle commitments, and their leaner development costs offer a viable path forward for publishers seeking stability amidst industry inflation. A strategic focus on single-player games could lead to long-term profitability. Read More: https://lnkd.in/eSherVp7 #SinglePlayerGames #GamingMarket #GameDevelopment #EldenRing #BlackMythWukong

"When it comes to online multiplayer games, gaming profiles separated by publishers, consoles, or distribution platforms can also often preclude people from being able to play with one another. In many cases, two people who bought exactly the same game, but one on Steam and another on Epic Games Store, won’t be able to play together unless developers go out of their way to implement the so-called cross-play functionality, and the same goes for titles on different consoles as well. You Will Own Nothing and Be Happy Apart from security risks and needless inconveniences, the existing Web2 ecosystem of segregated player accounts also raises a number of concerns regarding consumer rights. For instance, when players spend money on in-game items or premium currencies, all these assets exist only within their corresponding economies, with no way to withdraw or leverage them in some other way."

Epic Games has partnered with notable telecom company Telefónica to have Fortnite and the Epic Games Store become pre-installed apps on select Android devices. This is a long-term partnership that will run through 2025 and will start with compatible Telefónica Android devices in Spain, the UK, Germany, Mexico and Spanish-speaking LATAM countries. This currently includes the titles Fortnite, Fall Guys and Rocket League Sideswipe, with third party games potentially being available in the future as well. More expanded details about the partnership are expected to be revealed at a later time as well. With nearly 400M devices on the Telefónica network, this could be a huge expansion for Epic Games titles to reach a mainstream audience that might not be as familiar with these games. Curious to see if other telecom & gaming companies strike deals like this in the near future.
