“Listening is an act of love.” - Dallas Taylor (host of Twenty Thousand Hertz) In educational leadership, we spend a lot of time on how to give feedback. The problem is that we don’t spend enough time developing leaders on the most essential prerequisite - listening. My go-to framework is RASA by Julien Treasure, author of “How to Be Heard.” R - Receive This means being fully present for the conversation. Put away your cell phone, make eye contact, nod, and don’t stenographer the conversation; just write down the key points. A - Appreciate Channel Oprah. Listen loudly. Smile, lean in, and thank the other person for sharing. S - Summarize “What I hear you saying is? Do I have that right?” Restate in your own words what the person is saying to ensure you understand. A lot can get lost in that tiny void of air between you and the other person. A - Ask Ask deep questions that show that you are curious and not just waiting for your turn to talk but care about and want to learn from the other person. Show your team that you love ‘em - listen. #educationalleadership #listening
