Some time last year, I accidentally joined a local group at work called the "Green Team". I responded to an email, and then all of a sudden I was on the committee. Thank you Florence Van Dyke 🤣💚 What I have loved about being in New Zealand Trade and Enterprise's Wellington Green Team, is that I was very welcome, even though I clearly wasn't as green as some of my bike-riding, vegan-eating, composting-in-their-gardens workmates. But, that is entirely the point. Our Green Team was set up to learn, improve and, importantly, act locally. We all have the power to contribute positively. And so, it was SUCH A PLEASURE to co-host a hui last week alongside Jamee Taylor on the topic of Entrepreneurship and Sustainability. We were so lucky to have four amazing speakers: Adam McConnochie from Solid - Sustainable Oral Care, Sophie Brooker and Karina McCallum from Nonstop Solutions and NZTE board member and entrepreneurial champion Deb Shepherd. We had a provocative question to frame our conversation: 🌿🌱How can entrepreneurs strike a harmonious balance between ambition and sustainability?🌿🌱 Non Stop and Solid each shared how their businesses came to be. Both solving fundamental problems which they decided to address 👉🏽 Non Stop - reimagining large scale events and the waste they create, and getting stuck in sorting waste at the likes of Cuba Dupa and Around the Bays 👉🏽 Solid - teethcare, with fluoride, that doesn't send waste to landfill - because it is madness how much the big players currently contribute to landfill. Along with Deb, what was clear theme from all our speakers was that they all share a healthy dose of positivity and optimism. 🌱 💚 💡 With clients, the Non Stop team talk about how might the sustainability for an event be improved by just 1%? And then incrementally make improvements over time. Of course fixing EVERYTHING is IMPOSSIBLE. But improving by 1%? That’s doable. ✅ 💚
Big thanks to the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Green team for inviting Adam along to share the Solid story at their latest hui 😊 It was great to hear from our friends Sophie and Karina at Nonstop Solutions and to meet NZTE board member Deb Shepherd. Companies like Solid get a lot from NZTE so it was nice to share with the team the kaupapa behind why we do what we do. Ngā mihi Megan and team!

We started Queritius four years ago. Contrary to appearance, we have not slid in on a shrimp sandwich. In fact, we have failed quite often. We did not make it to Chambers & Partners, in the first year. Nor in the second. We did not manage to secure third party funding for a large case we really counted on. We lost two major cases which we candidly believe should have been decided in favor of our clients. We parted ways with a few great colleagues and excellent lawyers. We made some embarrassing mistakes. To give one example, when stepping down from a case in a somewhat tense circumstances, I personally sent our farewell e-mail addressed to “Dear Members of the Arbitral Tribunal, Dead Colleagues…”, without noting the typo 🤦♂️ But failures are a part and parcel of any human endeavor. As a great movie quote puts it, “it is not about how hard you can hit, it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. That is how winning is done”. And so, we keep moving forward. Enriched with experience, improved from our mistakes, resilient, and still passionate about what we do.

“being part of something bigger but also having the courage to stand alone, and to belong to yourself above all else.” According to research by Coqual, a nonprofit think tank, as sense of belonging at work is rooted in four elements: 1) being seen for your unique contributions; 2) connected to your coworkers; 3) supported in your daily work and career development; and 4) proud of your organization's values and purpose.

The interactive masterclass on change was a joy to facilitate. What a warm and curious group to connect with! We went deep into the question: how do we turn goals into reality? Here are the key points we covered: 💪Leverage is what makes a goal go from “wishful thinking” to a “must have.” Understand what the consequences of the goal are - and how achieving it (or not) will impact what matters most to you. 🔥Having a plan, on it’s own, doesn’t turn goals into reality. We still have to follow through on the plan and it’s leverage that makes us do that. Leverage lights a fire under our a**e and gets us going. ⚡️⚡️ It’s useful to have both positive and negative leverage on our goals. Neurologically, we’re hardwired to avoid pain. That’s why negative leverage is key: we are powerfully driven to avoid a big bad consequence. 🌅 Skipping a goal might not seem like a big deal this year, but what if we kept skipping that goal for 5 years… or 20 years? We have much more leverage for change when we think in the big picture. ❤️🚣♀️ Reaching the goal: going from Point A to Point B - isn’t a straight line. Life happens and self-compassion is a soothing balm for when things get rough. Here are awesome, free online resources: https://lnkd.in/dMQvqrCs It was great to get feedback from participants that the experience was both enjoyable and useful. Thanks again for having me, PWN Norway! 💐💐💐
