What is the key safety mechanism behind a via ferrata set? The core safety element of a via ferrata set is the shock absorber, designed to lengthen the braking distance and reduce forces during a fall. Typically, this is a progressive-tear energy absorber made of two specially sewn webbings that progressively tear during a fall. Via ferrata climbers ascend using a steel cable with at least one carabiner attached, facing the greatest risk when switching carabiners at anchor points due to potential falls. European standards (EN 16869 and EN 958) ensure falls are limited to five meters, with shock absorbers designed to reduce impact forces. Falls typically involve three stages: ▪️descending to the next anchor, ▪️shock absorber engagement, and ▪️hitting the rock face. This sequence underscores the high injury risk, highlighting the importance of treating via ferrata sets as emergency equipment.
