Recently whilst watching a quiz show and being surprised that one of the questions related to Parkinson’s Law, which states “work expands so as to fill the time available for it’s completion” this was coined by Cyril Northcote in an essay in 1955. This led me to share my observations as a Lean Practitioner and Operations Leader, here are a few strategies that will help identify and avoid the pitfalls associated with Parkinsons Law. Focus on Value-Added Activities: Identify and prioritize value-added activities that directly contribute to meeting customer needs the use of Yamazumi charts to capture the elements. By eliminating non-value-added tasks and streamlining processes, you can prevent work from expanding unnecessarily. Set Clear Goals and Deadlines: Establish clear goals, targets, and deadlines for production activities, such as Takt time. By setting challenging yet achievable goals, you create a sense of urgency and focus that discourages procrastination and excessive time allocation. Implement Pull Systems: Adopt pull-based production systems, such as Kanban, to align production with customer demand. By producing only what is needed, when it is needed, you prevent overproduction and avoid the accumulation of excess inventory. Standardised Work Processes: Document and standardize work processes to ensure consistency and efficiency. Standardized work provides a framework for optimal performance, reducing variability and preventing work from expanding beyond necessary bounds. Create a Culture of Continuous Improvement: Encourage continuous improvement and innovation at all levels of the organization. By empowering employees to identify and eliminate waste, you create a culture of efficiency and productivity that counters the effects of Parkinson's Law. By implementing these strategies, Business Leaders can mitigate the impact of Parkinson's Law and create leaner, more efficient manufacturing operations.
